California invades Colorado!

Hey everyone, new to the boards, just wanted to stop in and say hello. If the topic alarmed you, not to worry, California isn't planning a mass exodus just yet. Just 2 sledders heading out your way in a couple weeks. I know everyone hates Californians, so instead of being outted at a later date, I thought I'd put it on the table.

So we're going to be out there from jan 16th through the 26th. We've got a buddy in Boulder, so we'll be basing out of there. I'd love to hear some suggestions as to where to go ride. We also both snowboard, so we'd like to ride some backcountry as well as hit a few major resorts.

If anyone dares to meet up with us (don't worry we won't tell your friends you rode with cali kids) we'd love to find a small-ish group of intermediate-advanced riders to show us around.

This plan has already been in progress for the last several years......this state is quickly becoming Colorfornia.....

:(

How many of the people in Colorado were born and raised there? I've been here my whole life. 4th Generation, and it's funny to hear the "locals" talk about how they've been here since 1992.

Ya, we seem to have the same effect on Oregon. Except they hate us a little more because we drive up the price of their real estate by travelling north and overpaying for land. I've lived in California all my life, and as much as I say I want to move somewhere else, I've yet to actually do so.

But back to why I posted this thread in the first place, WHO WANTS TO RIDE? Or at least who's got some suggestions where we should go ride?

We'd like some spots where there's good off trail riding, but somewere without severe avy danger. Of course we will bring some common sense, but that includes picking a good spot in the first place.

thought the same thing when I read the topic..... "This has been happening for a while, it's not news..."

What kind of sleds you beach boys riding? I need to know about your equipment first:face-icon-small-hap. That sounded kinda "californish" didn't it:D

We've got mountain sleds, 800 and up. Not sure exactly which ones we're bringing yet, but they're capable of making it through our "sierra cement."

And just to set the record straight, we do actually have mountains out here, and I see a lot more of them than the beach. :D

I was born and raised in Colorado, lived here my whole life minus the active duty Navy time of 15 years....not many ports here in the mountains. :D

To the original poster: You speak of the Sierra Cement....I guess it's windblown? Stuff gets pretty light and fluffy here, as Trinity can well attest to....more specifics on what you ride would help....a "mountain 800" could be many different sleds, with a variety of performance levels.

I'll most likely be riding a rmk 900. But we've got a few different sleds so not sure which we'll bring yet. Most likely we'll bring out 3 for the 2 of us so we won't spend our trip fixing one should anything happen. None of them are heavily modified.

We call it Sierra Cement because our snow is typically a lot heavier than yours. Our powder is still drenched in comparison to that of the rockies. Something about the trip across the Utah salt flats I suppose.

So many posts and not one suggestion?

You will be within a few hours of several different riding areas.

Check out Coloradosledcity.com for all the different trailheads available.

Your best bets will be up in Summit County and the surrounding areas. Also, its in wyoming, but the Snowy Range has some great sledding and only a few hours from boulder.

Where do you ride in California. I have put down quite a few tracks out at Sonora Pass

LOL - moved here in '92 after graduating from college in the midwest :face-icon-small-coo. funny observation from our "colorado" ride @ VP a week ago - the group consisted of people from OH, IA, MI, and MO. all transplants.

As for the OP... I'm not an expert on the options, but Vail Pass ($6/person/day use fee), Breck, Rabbit Ears, Grand Lake, Leadville, and South Park (Cottonwood, etc.) are the one's I hear about most. Those are probably your best bet considering your base in the people's republic.

Just keep track of this sub-forum and you'll find groups fixin' to ride together @ said places, closer to when you're arriving.

VP gets packed (parking area) on busy days after about 9am. I'm not 'advanced' so I'll bow out vs. getting myself in trouble - or asking for too many snobunje pulls ;)

Also check out the *other* CO forum @ sledmods.com

Good luck and enjoy.

Since 86, from SE MN. yawn. I do know rabbit ears though:D I'd send you south right now. South Park, Irwin, Vail pass. The north needs a good dump, then I'd rec the ears, snowies. We get sierra cement... in May. Beautiful state, CA, great terrain and that pass out of Reno is Deeeeep and steeeeep....CO is not far behind with the invasion.(me guilty). MN is dismal, good fishing and duck hunting though. Not home anymore.

Thanks for the suggestions. I'd definately check out that site. I usually ride around truckee/north lake tahoe, kirkwood, chester or butte meadows.

Thanks also to cardiackid for the suggestions.

And in response to trinity, no. Naturally, given my location, I have learned to be accepting of alternative lifestyles, but only if both chicks are hot. :P

Speaking of which, where's the best place to get some cheap drinks and not-quite-so-cheap women?

The first DON'T CALIFORNICATE COLORADO bumper sticker hit the road in 1976--didn't do much to stop the immigrants--damage is done, come on over. Back country skiing is really good at Vail Pass. Make sure you have an ABS.

At least you don't talk funny like our Minnesota buddies.:D

BTW, nothing is cheap in Colorado:beer;

BCB

At the $1,000 mark I'll have to do without the ABS this time. And if everything in colorado is expensive I'll just have to get tanked before I head to the bar.

That $1,000 bones is way cheaper than a funeral:face-icon-small-sho If you gonna do any climbing at all, I don't see how you couldn't afford one. But, hey that's just me. I don't want to die doing what I love. As someone smarter than me once said-"the problem with dying while doing someone you love is the fact that your dead". Anywho, enjoy your time in our fine state:beer;

NP.

And per the bold inquiry above - you're going to need to be more specific about armpit hair preferences, along with your tolerance of Patchouli Oil since we are talking about tail in Boulder.
