buzzing at around 5k rpms?

Took the kids for a rip up and down the ditch today and my sled was making a buzzing noise on the clutch side from what I could tell around 5k rpms. At lower and higher rpms sound seems to go away? Belt looked ok, maybe a loose pipe spring? It was a very strange noise.

later

any thoughts?

07 800r-800 miles clutches redone at 500 mark. Heading out today to take a closer look.

So much vibration on those sleds it could be anything, maybe just the clutch guard or something vibrating.

Only thing I could find was that my belt was sitting quite low in the secondary and I am out of adjustment. Other then that had a look in the chain case everything looked fine so tighten it up and put some new lube in. Put a newer belt on and can still hear some mid range buzzing noise more pronounced when i let off the throttle but then it goes away. Everthing under the hood seems firmly attached and turning smoothly (bearings). Guess I will ride it more until it becomes more apparent what the problem is unless someone has thoughts.

buzzing= either a loud vibration noise or some rolling grinding noise...springs, clutches, driveshaft, and chain case all appear fine.

For those of you who are hearing an annoying "rattle" at 5500-6000 RPM's, is it more apparent/louder on the left side/brake side of the machine? If so, I had the same exact thing happening on my 154X after a couple days of mountain riding(150 miles). Spent a bit of time chasing this annoying rattle down and it ended up being the brake disc protector rubbing ever so slightly on the bottom of the caliper. The fix was to slightly bend the caliper protector away from the brake caliper so it would no longer make contact. It would become noticable when cruising between 5000 - 6000 RPM's and would go away when you grab a handful of throttle but would return when going back into the "cruising" RPM zone. Don't be surprised if it comes back as your boots have a tendency to push/bend it back into contact with the caliper, but it's as simple as getting the flat blade screwdriver out when it starts to make the noise again and giving it a bit of adjustment.

Hope this helps,
-John

Me too, just bend it up and squirt some silicone glue under it. Done

I will check it out. Thanks for the input.

Also noticed when checking things over that when I moved the rotor there would be some play and then click into place? This something to do with the rer and helix or could it be signs of splines, bearing trouble? Belt was off and chain was tensioned. Was interesting to see chain case tensioner bolt move and i rocked rotor.....never seen that before but all looks good in the chain case.

If it sounds kinda like a bunch of coins shaking in a can, then it may be your clutch rollers and/or shims. Mine were totally cooked after 1,800 miles on my XP and it's now in the shop awaiting warranty parts. You other high mileage guys may want to look at your ski bushings too. Mine were totally cashed. Getting those under warranty as well.
