Buying a used 2011 Pro

I may be in the market to buy a pro for my 11 year old son. I have seen a lot of the 2011's around here and they seem to be pretty cheap in comparison. Some have new motors, some have around 1100 miles or so with apparently no problems. I did have a fella tell me to stay away from the 11's due to engine failures, injector problems and Map problems. The way I see it they all will have some sort of hiccup here and there.

I'm guessing you have considered this, but you might be better served with a 2012 600 for your son. Yeah, they could have issues, too, but they are easier on everything in the driveline. And the pricing would be similar, I'd guess, or even better, considering most 11 800's have had the motor done and the seller would want money out of it. The 11's, and I had one, also had running injector changes and issues, and the wiring was typical Poo factory at-the-time high school shop-class quality. I'm sure you know about the other motor issues. I still have a 14 8 and a 13 6, and the 6 is a solid runner, I've had no motor issues, it's easier on clutches, belts, track, etc., and learning throttle control would be easier. JMPE. Good luck.

Thanks for the input but he is coming off of a skidoo xp 800 154 so I'm sure if I put him on a 600 he would steal my 800. I have looked at a 2011 that has a "fix it kit" on it and a new motor for $5300. Still not sure If an 11 is something I should gamble on but not ruling them out.

Not sure what the fix it kit is.

With that milage on the 11-800 (I have one also), be sure you read about the exhaust slide valve fix as this will be one of the next problems that pop up and it is expensive (cyl, pistons, and posssible bottom end!) read or better yet , call indy-dan as he can machine the exhaust gillotines to eliminate that problem and some dealers have their own way of fixing this problem that comes from the cyl wearing where the exh valve seat base contacts the cyl and wears it so that the guillotine face gets into contact with the pistons. This issue came to me on the 800 after doing the top end with a fix kit and stage 3 and not knowing to check the valve bases and clearances to the brand new pistons and it went less than 200 miles and the exhaust valves got the new pistons and cyl, so, $2500 later and 3 weeks was running again. I can't blame it on anythhing but my own ignorance!!

Fix Kit

Thanks for the input but he is coming off of a skidoo xp 800 154 so I'm sure if I put him on a 600 he would steal my 800. I have looked at a 2011 that has a "fix it kit" on it and a new motor for $5300. Still not sure If an 11 is something I should gamble on but not ruling them out.

Not sure what the fix it kit is.

Several fix kits out there most typically include new pistons and a shim plate that goes under the cylinders.

IMO I wouldn't pay that much for an 11, I've seen them in the mid $4's around here. There has been some screaming deals on 13's which are typically a better choice for the engine but it did have issue with A-Arms and the QD belt.

None of the FIX KITS address the exhaust valve issue of the gillotine contacting the pistons. What happens when this happens is that it usually destroys the Pistons and Cylinder and no one even looks at WHY it happened. I have photos of the whole process and talked with Indy Dan and he did confirm my suspect issues, so that is why I say to check it if you are going to put a fix kit on a used 1 to 2 thousand mile cylinder. It is cheap to address if you know about it!

OK guys thanks for the input, I have decided to stay completely away from the 11's. I don't need any problems.

just somthing to think about I just just bought a 2013 pro 800 163 here in south dakota for 4000.00 cash... 1500 miles on it... if you do some looking around and are willing to travel a bit there are some smoking deals out there on 13 to 15 pro

One more quick comment on the exhaust guillotine slide valves, this is not only 11 model year but all of the polaris engines from the 900 on to the 2015 model year and I think the electronic servo actuated valves on 16 and up solve this problem FWIW! Next time you see a set of pistons out of a 2500+mile engine, look closely at the exhaust side of the piston for the tell tale marks. I have 5 sets of pistons from different engines and they all have the marks, but only 2 sets let go with expensive damage.

I loved my 2011. Such a fun sled and ran great until the piston skirt broke and took out the head, cylinders, piston, crank and knocked a hole in the case. Polaris stepped up and did a great job of fixing it after I paid them $3500.

Bevis, It would be interesting to look at the exhaust side of both pistons to see if the exhaust gillotine valve had contacted and made marks??? that could have caused the piston problem -- any bets?
