Butte Meadows 09

There is anywhere from a trace to maybe a foot (on the blown & loaded locations) of pow.

Not arguing the depth, just the consistency. Where we went on Friday, the sleds never broke more than about eight inches. If I don't get stuck - it ain't that deep. The pow as it were, was very well set up. When I read what was posted on the BMHS site, I about spit my coffee out. But after talking to a friend that was a DLI yesterday, I can understand. He said they left in the morning with about three foot of pow and came in that afternoon with maybe half that.

The storms that came in first were warm and wet, the last one was colder. So a couple of feet of wet and heavy gets dropped, then another foot or two thats a little more dry, add a day or two of sun and cold temps - fairly deep but well set up.

Sad News from the Hill

We lost a local yesterday at Butte Meadows.:face-icon-small-sad

Got up the hill yesterday evening and there was every kind of Emergency vehicle up there; helo too. Rolled into the Outpost to find that Bill's neighbor from next door had been killed up on the mountain.

Only speculating right now, but it sounds like he was up at Stump Hill and hit something; landing on his head. I know none of this first hand, only from conversation with folks at the Outpost.

Came down the hill this morning to change water, going back up to do some chores. I'll see if I can add some facts (where, why, how, etc.) tonight. My gut feeling is there are a lot of land mines just under the surface.

RIP Mike T. :rose: If I have to go; I want to be on a sled too.

My condolence's to his family and friends. :brokenheart:

A sad day for all of us in the sledding community

Have a little more info after talking to a few that were at the scene.

Mike apparently ended up on the "left" of the group of trees that are on the left (if looking up from the warming hut) side of Stump Hill. On his decent he somehow got sucked over into a tree well. If you are familiar with that location; you know that that particular area is fairly steep. One way or another he ended up dropping into a tree well from an already steep angle. From what I gather, Mike entered a rather deep tree well from a downward angle at or near center. He made contact with the front part of his helmet, and from witnesses, he was knocked from the sled; and exhibited no further movement.

There were some medically trained people on scene and appropriate measures were taken as quickly as possible. It’s my understanding the there was no response. Friends and bystanders worked on Mike for the better part of an hour and a half; to no avail. Don't know if there was a heart issue, spine issue or blunt force trauma.

If anyone was there, or has better info, please correct anything that is in error. This is one of those sh it ty deals; but as I posted earlier - Lord please let me go with a sled between my legs, and give my kin and friends solace in the fact that I went happy.

Everyone stay cool out there. We're almost done with the season.

The hut has been in the works for a while. Finally got funding for it 2007 and construction 2008.

As for the picture, I thought it was Justin Adkins; as per a conversation the following week, but Madmin was there so he'd be in the know.

Mike - got more pictures from the season. This thread is in desperate need of some sprucing up.:)

I thought it was Heath - the day before he had the stuck just to the right, next to the trees, and I thought he was going back for another attempt.
Post em up Stacy.

Mike
