Looks like photo shop, but you have not clue the horrendous terrain. The stuff is like glass and cuts the fawk out of all it touches.

Pretty incredible adventure for me and the crew. We had a half dozen wash out cuz they couldn't cut it, but most of the crew were tough as hell. I consider this one of the most demanding jobs I've ever done. Louisiana during the height of summer was pretty rough, but not near the physical exertion. On this job we had to cover about 25 KM per day and by the end I felt like an animal more than capable of the task. Pretty cool what levels the body can rise to when pushed !!

What were you doing out there?

I'm a botanist and specialize in Hawaiian plants. I was working for the DOD, looking for endangered species on military lands. The marines want to build a new training range so they have to do a biological assessment to determine what will be affected. Plants, animals, archaeological remains, etc. So happens the 4500 acre area we surveyed is on an active bombing range so we had to wear flak gear and be escorted by specially trained personnel. We came across quite a few unexploded high explosive artillery rounds, 250 and 500 pound wing bombs. Most had their fuses knocked off and were relatively harmless, but some of the stuff we came across could potentially be set off by kicking or stepping on it. Nobody stepped on anything and all was well.

One cool thing...I'm salary and so I never get overtime pay, even though I rack up about 70 hours a week when i'm in the field. On this trip the boss requested OT for me and it was approved. Should be a cool 6 grand for OT and another 4 grand in per-diem for 6 weeks work!! I guess it wasn't exactly hell. lol But my knees and feet are still sore as fawk.
