burried but prepared

Geeez, you know its painfull to think about IF an ABS would have saved my buds life on Sunday.:(

My other buddy and I got down to where I seen Dave last and we both had NO signal at all. If one company makes a beacon that has a range of 40m and the other 50m......well ,I want the one with 400m range cause thats how far we found him down the mountain. wtf? I'm sure the technology's out there? Onstar can find you in your car any friggn'n place. How about the tech that goes into these new gaming systems? sorry for the rant!

Thanks everyone for your business!

You definitely want to go with a digital beacon. The analog beacons usually work fine and have longer range, but the "user-friendliness" just isn't there. You will have to practice a lot more with an analog, learn how to grid, and hope your buddy is the one with the digital beacon so he can find you easier.

As mentioned, the BCA Tracker is VERY easy to use. (THE EASIEST) It is a digital beacon, and it has two antenna, which eliminates the need to perform a grid, instead, it points you in the direction to go and all you have to do is follow the flux line.

The pieps is also a nice beacon. It is easy to use (IMO, it is not as easy as the tracker when it comes to a single burial), it has a little further range than the tracker and is easier in multiple burial situations. It has three antennae, which eliminates some of the "spikes/dead spots" when you move from one flux line to another.

The mammut pulse is also a great beacon. It is digital with three antennae, it also has analog which helps increase the range. The pulse also has a "motion-sensor" feature, which can transmit to other pulse beacons whether or not you are still moving (aka have a pulse).

PM me with any other questions you may have and hopefully I can help you out or get you pointed in the right direction.

Beacons

My son and I were out practicing over the weekend with our SOS beacons and we did an exercise where one waited in the garage and then the other came out with no directional help and started looking. Our first attempts turned out to be recoveries and not rescues!!!! However my 10 yearold got his rescues down to about 5 minutes and I was 2-4 minutes. This being at distances of 200 feet and less. Now would a digital beacon have been that much better? And being that these beacons are but two years old is it time to upgrade?

I have both a tracker and a pieps, If I had it to do all over again I would buy 2 pieps units. They are easier to use and I think the extra antenna (they have 3 compared to the 2 that the bca has) is nice. I am not saying that the bca isnt a great unit, it is, I just like the pieps better.
Doesnt really matter, the important thing is that you know how to use what you have.

Oh and get it from SNOBIGDEAL. great to deal with, and FAST shipping.

Ken,
I completely agree with you and really wonder why someone hasnt pushed this more when it comes to beacons. If you made some sort of a beacon that also used gps, that you and your buddies synced up when the ride started, that way at anytime you can see the last known spot of your buddie, sure would narrow down that search area to that 40-50m range a lot quicker. Just my opinion on this.

does not matter how mutch you pay or save for your gear or how new or old it is, a well trained and practisted searcher with a old transeiver will be able to recover your buried *** faster then the guy with the latest greatest equipment that never practices with it. over 80% of riders have never done more then 15 min practise in 2 years or more. that is a fact......
practise, practise,practise
