Buff Pass/Rabbit Ears hows the snow?

Today was a BLAST!!! Wish I could have ridden with a few Snowest member however I managed to burry myself a few times. Avoided the few rocks that are still killers. At some spots I would jump off my sled and it would be up to my chest, couldn't even walk. Just Incredible!

Nice

Holy S :D I cant wait to get out there!!! Looks like your having alot of fun Pro!! Getting stuck is half the fun:face-icon-small-ton

I hope it keeps getting deeper!!

We are heading out there, leaving tomorrow noon from Sioux Falls, SD.
Hope to see you guys out there.
Thanks for the update.

13 miles. After the first couple miles the snow gets deeper, then after the next 5 deeper still.

ProX, glad you had fun and excuse my grouchyness, but I need more snow. Not saying you can't boondcock some right now, but you better know how to read the surface and be wary or you will get into some nasty stuff below.

I'm about twice your age and heal slower, so I have no interest in riding on anything less than 4 or 5' of hard base, so I'm sitting here beotchen  I don't like puttering around being careful, so here i sit...waiting til stuff sets up and more falls. Buff is about there, but I wouldn't go off trail down at RE until another 8' falls and sets up. I ride there a lot and know how to interpret the snotel data and it corresponds with the reports coming in. It's a slow start this year and if I was traveling 500 or a thousand miles to off-trail boondock, i'd look somewhere else or put the trip off a few weeks. Sure, you can still have some fun, but not what we expect for this time of year at the ear's. Spoiled I guess.

October was looking great and overall precip wise we're doing fine, but we had some very warm dryish weather in November that killed us. Buff is sitting at 51" on the snotel/66" on the stick. the snotel is about 20 feet from the stick and the discrepency is usually the same or close.

Before this latest storm we had 10" worth of water, or 120" worth of snow and all that compacted/melted down into a measly 33" base. the last few weeks we've picked up 3" of water precip and the snotel jumped up to 60" for awhile. Depending on temps and wind, that will settle down to around 40" or so of good base. Hence, we need another couple feet to to put the top of Buff over 4' of good base. Before these last storms, RE, 13 miles south, had only a foot of base or less. Since the last storms, snotel bumped up over 30" on the east side, 12" on the west, so it will be lucky to have 20" when this sets up. In closing, WE NEED MORE SNOW! Seems to be coming though, so cross your fingers :) Then the party starts :D

Yeah I hear ya about being weary. I just had not ridden on snow since Jan of 08 due to Deployments to Iraq. I like the Steamboat Area thus thats why we traveled 750miles up to ride. I'll be coming back in about 3 or so weeks to ride again. Had a Blast and met some stellar people up top. I am just appreciative to have been able to have had the chance to shred some fresh pow and burn a bunch of race fuel :D . I guess you just have to look at the situation in my perspective.

PRO440X......You know I read through the post and picked up on the tracer rounds and blowing snow comments. I am not sure many did. I just wanted to take a moment and thank you for all you have done, I am super proud that you made it back to enjoy the liberties that you have been fighting abroad for regardless of the quality of the snow conditions. May your quest to enjoy life to the fullest be a rewarding and long. THANKS AGAIN MAN, ITS APPRECIATED GREATLY!!!!!

Yeah it was good to just get up there and ride! I'll be back in a few weeks to ride again! No Problem for the service! That's what I signed up to do! I need to ride as much as I can before spring time because that's when I am possibly going to get hit once again to deploy, this time probably to Afghanistan! Have to use my free time back in the U.S. to its fullest extent!
