If almost everyone makes it across, how do they pick the winner?
Well it depends on the mountain. Many mountains do not have a contest, they just let you ski across the pond.
The mountain I was going to go to before i tore my ACL has a true contest. Everybody starts at a certain spot above the pond and tries to get across. If you dont make it you are done. The people who make it go back up, but start lower down the hill, for less run in, and less speed. They keep moving down the hill till only 1 survives.

YOu had to have taken a spill, it looked like you were going down backwards......
They did not make the exit for the pond very smooth. It was a decent sized jump. The crowd was standing about 10-15 ft. from the end of the pond. So there was no room to land and stop, so I decided to just crash and stop quickly.
