BRP - Belts & Gear Change - New Guidelines

So dropped my '08 XP 154X off for warranty drive shaft replacement.

While there I inquired my refund for the gear change I paid for last season that at the time was supposed to be warranty (others had theirs covered by BRP) & asked if the new 166 belt I had received as a replacement for one blown last year could be swapped for new 377 (that all summits are supposed to be using).

Gears - BRP had issued new bulletin -> gear changes now only warranty on 146's. They determined that gearing wasn't the problem with blown belts, it was the wrong belt and alignment. Problem is my 21T gear is in Quebec and BRP won't send it back, they say I don't need it because people won't be changing it back so they are keeping it....but won't reimburse cost of it. 10 others at this dealership had theirs go thru fine, because at the time BRP was scrambling to find a fix and keep people happy. I was a little later in the season so I get hosed.

Belts - According to BRP, riders now know they are supposed to be using the 377 so they shouldn't be using the 166 and won't give 377's in place of the 166's.

My sled came with (2) 166 belts when I got it. If I blow one I now have to pay the difference ($50 CDN) to get the 377 belt. Last year if the 377's had been in stock I would have gotten one each time the 166 blew, but not this year. BRP is apparantly tightening the reins on the belt issue and screwing the little guy.

My arguement was the 166 came with the sled (for free), if sled must now use 377 belts to work properly (without any mods) then why not trade me a new 377 for the new 166 I got last season (still in cardboard sleeve). The response I got was basically Sorry, BRP is making the rules, only thing I could do was phone customer service and plead my case.

So now I have (2) 166 belts, that may or may not blow apart and then I have to buy new ones because my 2 year warranty only covers what BRP wants it to cover.

Oh well, guess my rant is over......not blaming dealer, they have always gone out of their way to help.

Anyone else run into this lately.

My experience was that BRP wouldn't warranty the belt unless it had been used. Got my first 377 last season after the 166 worn out (over 600 miles on it). Threw the 377 in as a spare and ran the other 166 belt I had and they warrantied/replaced it for free this fall since it had been used. I didn't experience all the belt problems so many people were having as it seems as if my dealer, Xtreme in Longmont, got the clutching set up right!

166 will last the same as 377 with proper clutch alignment that my dealer and other locals deny is a problem. still havent seen any brp paper work to shove it in their faces.

I guess I got lucky on the 377 belt issue.... this past spring my dealer in MN swapped out the 2 used 166 belts off my wife's & my 154X's for 2 new 377's and swapped out the 2 new spare 166's for 2 new 377's, no charge. BTW: I had no 166 belt issues with my 154X last winter, just did the swap because BRP said that the 377 belt was "the correct" belt for this machine. As far as 166 belt issues on my wifes 154X, we never got a chance to ride it as we picked it up at the end of the season.

I had a new 166 and have to pay the difference for the 377 this year. Convenient enough the 166 went down $10 to $89 and the 377 was up $25 to $150. Nice little upsell for BRP and the dealership.

Yep gotta love it, stick it to the little guy again. Pay 15K for a sled, then BRP decides the belt that came with it is no longer sufficient, and you shouldn't use it because we say so, but we have a new and improved one we can sell you for twice the price, and if you don't we won't warranty your blown belt.

Oh well thats life. Guess they need some way to recooperate all the millions they wasted giving out all those free belts last year due to their own engineering and manufacturing problems.

Hopefully it snows lots this year then I can stop complaining and start riding.
