broken wrist?

Well, on the 31 i was out riding hit a jump and landed pretty hard and broke my wrist, scaphoid to be exact. acordding to the doctor its the worst bone in the wrist to break and will take a while to heal. What im wondering though is if anyone has broken it and kept riding with there cast on? Cause when i did it i thought it was just sprained and kept on snowmobiling for 3 hours after. would it get worse if i went out riding like this?

I have never had a wrist break actually never broken a bone luckily but I would think if the doctor said it is the worst bone to break at least give it a couple weeks to start healing but why risk it not healing and forcing yourself to possibly have surgery? Unfortunately it means your out of riding for 6 weeks or whatever it takes to heal but is it worth it to make it worse and have problems for the rest of your life?

ya i guess, i was looking some stuff up and its hard to heal because of the blood supply and all. Like if after a couple weeks if it isnt healing at all ill probably need surgery for pins .. but the thing is it happened the 31 and i only went to the hospital thursday and the doctor said it hasnt shifted that much so im hoping it'll heal .. no snowmobiling this year i guess

Yep-stay off that bone. Every time you point one pound of pressure on your thumb, 16 pounds of pressure are transferred to that bone. In other words, though you may not think you are not putting much pressure on the thumb, it will easily slide at the scaphoid. Stay off of it or you will be getting pins for certain. Take it from a med student. Good luck healing!

thanks for the help, got an appoinment tuesday to get it looked at some more and find out whats gonna happen .. hoping for some good news

After having 2 orthopedic surgeries on one ankle and actually needing a third on it, I say let it heal properly. My problems with my foot are more of a case of a multitude of issues and a job where I'm on my feet all day. If you can avoid having hardware in there the better. I had to have two of the four screws originally installed in my ankle removed and some bone spurs and calcium deposits/scar tissue removed as well.

Count yourself lucky, I spent a whole winter on crutches before I could even think of walking on my ankle. At least you can walk to the fridge and get stuff out and be able to shower without having to sit on a chair and hang your leg out the tub :biggrin1:!

Last spring the sled found a ditch that I wasn't quite ready for and I ended up tearing the Scaphoid-Lunate ligament in my right wrist. I had surgery 10 days later, and the doc said that it was the equivalent of tearing my ACL/MCL but with luck it would heal well and I would get 80-90% movement back. It was in a cast for 10 weeks with 2 pins all the way through my wrist. Pins came out in July and I have been aggressively working it since to rebuild the strength and range of motion. However I've found that I can't really sled with it unless I wear a brace for extra support, there's just too much stress put on the wrist. With the brace I have no troubles so you'll be good to go next year with one added piece of riding gear, but in the meantime let it heal! I never thought that I'd still be thinking about my wrist 8 months later, but I notice it all the time and I had a best case scenario surgery and recovery. There's just not enough blood flow and way too much stress on that area. Sorry to say you'll need to take the rest of the winter off to really give your wrist the best chance to heal. Good Luck.

bahh don't listen to a med student.:face-icon-small-win Listen to an x-ray tech!!!!:face-icon-small-hap

You follow moto or super cross? That little bone has ended many careers....Bubba broke it last year and if he isn't carefull his riding will be over.

That bone is an absolute beotch to heal due to the low blood flow. Listen to the doc and just bite the bullet....DON'T RIDE until he says you are clear. It's like this, do you want to suffer and not ride for a winter or do you want to never ride hard again?

I broke that bone last april on a dirt bike. It is a slow healer, but I was pretty functional. It stays sore for many months, but more as an irritant, not an incapacitating injury.

I currently am suffering a broken scaphiod due to a BMX injury, broken this particular bone several times in each wrist. slow to heal is true, but you can still get out there and give er, just gotta use will power to ignore it. I went out last weekend and it was weaker, which resulted in some OTB (over the bars) action, but the pain was managable and not worth giving up your season.

I broke mine in my right wrist about 7 years ago playing basketball. I didn't actually get x rays on it till three years later when i was in the doctors office for a physical. He said it was broke and never healed right. He recommended corrective surgery to fix it but i didn't want to be laid up. I still deal with some weakness in it today, like when doing a pushup my right wrist doesn't quite bend the same as the left. It also aches quite a bit when i am turning wrenches a lot in the shop for a few days. So i would recommend letting it heal properly because it can be quite bothersome later on i life.

I broke mine in April, though it was just some sprain and didn get X-rays until June ish.

To make a long story short, after several casts, dirbiking and quadding, they now have to take a bone out of my hip or elbow and insert it into my wrist. I also have to wear a custom brace for up to 3 months

Please, please save yourself some stress and don't use it until cleared

well, i went tuesday he said come back in a week to get new exrays, he said it should be all healed and good as new in 8 weeks, and that it should be just as strong but i might need to get a bit filed down if it blocks my moovement from how it heals. So im thinking end of ffebruary i should be able to get out for a month before all the snow melts

I broke the same bone in high school. finished the football season with the wrist wrapped. Was in a cast after football for a few months. the next fall it still hurt. went into see a doctor and they took a bone out of my hip and was in a cast for 5 months. the screw backed out on its own and had too have a second surgury. That was in 87-88. I still have some wrist issues today.
so you can keep riding and pay for it later. i did.

As much as I'm sympathetic to the wrist, I'm even more sympathetic that your riding season ends in March...now THAT'S depressing!

ya i know, well it basicly depends how much snow we get, i think in 2008/2009 season it lasted till like the end of april beggining of may, so im hoping to get some time to ride after all this, and to get some nice footage.. hopefully the wrist will be able to take it .
