3 weeks ago I was jogging with my dog and he took me out. I fell forward and broke my right wrist, I am looking for some info from people who been thru this, I had surgery last Tues and he put a screw in my bone. This bone is called the scaphoid bone it is right below your thumb "peanut shape".

have any you been thru this?how long were you down? I do know that 10 years ago they just put a cast on and hoped for the best as Ive talked to people that did it that way and it took 3 to 6 months to heal..ouch!!
the way I went seems to be 100% in 4 weeks i hope...any info would be great...

one of the hardest bones to heal due to poor vascularity.....take it easy and give it time.

many mx racers try and come back from this to fast and end up redoing surgery a few times and end up losing the bone.

Let me guess, you landed palm down trying to catch yourself and it broke? That's what happened to me.

I broke the same bone in the 8th grade(about 9 years ago).

I had a cast for like 6 weeks all the way up to my shoulder, then they cut it down to just below my shoulder for about 4 weeks, I don't remember if they cut it down right before my wrist after that or if they just gave me a wrist pad.

I was wearing something on my left arm for the whole summer basically.

Left wrist 32 breaks, my right wrist was referred to a box of rice krispy cereal, hundreds of broken bones. But hey they still work good enough to sled with.

Yikes !

You had better have a nice cushy job by the time the Osteoarthritis sets in...

My sawbones says the replacement wrists are quite aways out...

yep fell with are streached and palm open wide!!Ive read in few places that the screw replaces the cast. i have a half cASt "swell cast" it goes to my fore arm its no biggie looks like i will be back in a brace on wen.

ive also read that the surgery with the screw is 6 to 12 weeks 100%???

thanks every one for the info..

Sorry to hear FCG, do you need me to keep the RPM's high on your sled for a while? Kidding, hope you are able to ride soon!

I have a good friend that broke the same bone in a MX crash. Had surgery to get a screw put in, first surgery went OK and he tried riding about 8-10 weeks later. Had no grip and a lot of pain, went in for another surgery and found the bone not healing. Put in a second screw and took out some bone fragments. He was in and out of hard cast for a year and finally about 14 months after the original break had a 3rd surgery to remove the hardware. A month in a cast after that and he is been ok since, won’t ever have full mobility but at least he can ride again and has enough grip to hold a beer bottle tight enough to twist off the cap….going 15 months without being able to open a long neck was the worst part he says.

OUCH you guys not making me feel any better!!!LOL

thanks newmy1 but that line gettin longer by the day...lololo ouch

like he said and I said earlier.

DON'T EVEN THINK ABOUT PUSHING IT WHEN THE NAVICULAR/SCAPHOID IS INVOLVED

if top mx racers who are in prime shape can't push back from this, you most certainly will not be pushing hard on the sled any time soon. Talk to the Dr for hard numbers but he's gonna say that bone is a complete beotch to heal. I've x-rayed a fair share of folks dealing with breaks in that bone.

I broke my left wrist in 2000 while ATVing. I was in a cast for 6 weeks and then in a soft cast for another 4 weeks and then into Physical therapy. It was 6 months before i could work with it(anything good). It was so weak after the cast came off, i couldn't hold up my own wrist. Good luck to ya..

10 weeks ouch--well this is different than casting it and waiting!!from all the med journals Ive read and from what doc says this way is faster and easiest way to recover"screw"
im not in a full cast its just cast on the bottom of wrist and then wraped to hold it on-also going to a brace this week- i think/
in one the journals i read had a test with 38 and 40 people 38 had been casted up and wait and then 40 had screw!!there was a % of the 38 that had to have surgery after it healed, as for the 40 they were something like 85%recover in 4weeks then 10%took 6 weeks and then the rest but the last 5% were diabetic or blood issues!!!

did all you get the screw put in or was your crushed? i guess if they do bone graf too takes longer!!!

man i dont like hearing I wont see a sled this winter i got lot money into my m8 this year and sure hope to atleast take it for a rip down a trail!!is that too much to hope for???
