Broken Drive shaft.

Anyone else break a drive shaft yet?

I was goin up a hill in deep snow the other day and KABLAM!!!!
Came to a pretty quick stop, thought I had broken a belt, looked down and saw the pulley in the wrong spot. Got towed out by another Hawk.

Never Fear. Good friend Joel(who just picked up a 06 600 outlaw) went to work and whipped out some new drive shafts. Solid this time.

The factory one is hollow and had crack thru the keyway slot.
So if anyone else runs into this problem we gotcha covered.

Nice shaft!! (Why does that sound wrong?)

edit to add: I bet the dispacement is in the Kawahawki 800 class.

Towing a Hawk:

unhook hood tiedowns and lift hood on unit to be towed;
hook/tie 12-15ft long towing rope/strap to cross brace at front of frame;
remove drive belt from clutches;
reset hood and hood tiedowns with strap sticking out;
hope a twoski is in your group, since they have a convenient bumper to tie off to, otherwise, the rear subframe cut-out is a good hooking point to use on a Hawk for towing;
hop on and ride that towed bugger out at a moderate speed(10-15+mph) to keep balance;

or if you are also not ridable(injured), lay Hawk on right, non clutch side and drag with a shorter strap tied to ski loop...

Broken Shaft

Eberg blew his shaft out last year too. Sounded like a rough time and some $$$ to get another one made. Glad to know you have a few if anybody else runs into the same problem.

800

Only had a tie down to tow with.
Hooked it to the lower triple clamp.
Was about a 1/2 foot behind the towing Hawk's track
Was amazed how easily it towed.

so...

my 600 horsepower 503 shouldnt be breaking shafts anytime soon i hope...knock on wood. or is it only 60 horse? i thought the manual says 600.haha. is it the same shaft just incase i need to buy one of yours?

Once right in the middle the second one right agains the right side bearing ! Dont know how or why for sure

Good thing our brake is mounted on the drive shaft vs jackshaft in your case. You could still use the brake to get home and Sledr2 had insta brake and then no brakes at all!!:eek:

How much are these chromo jack or drive shafts costing if I had to replace one?

Nice towing with the short strap. It would be lighter to carry than my long one. Might have to try it, off the lower triple?

Shafts are running in the $200 range for moly from fabcraft . We use the upper triple for towing useually , i like about 15 to 25 mph depending on how rough it is. Just drop your belt an go !

I've also got some jackshafts for sale. Made them out of chrome moly. Seen a couple of the alum. ones break so we made some steel ones.

They are about $160 ea.

Splinned for the Ski-Doo or 1 in. and keyed for the Cat.
