Broke the Crank @ 1181 miles

Snapped off the clutch yesterday with 1181 miles on the motor. Has ran incredibly awesome until I had to get towed out of a hole, and off the mountain. The primary put a big crack in the belly plastic and even hit the secondary and tore it up. Now I need to decide whether to get a new crank, plastic, and possibly clutches or just part it and start over.

Personally I hate to see sleds get parted out. I would send the motor to indydan for a TM1 which comes with a brand new primary and then find a used secondary and used plastics on ebay.

I couldn't imagine parting a sled out with less than 1200 miles on the thing... aside from this failure, it's barely broke in.:face-icon-small-sad

I too wouldn't part it out. The stock 30mm crank snub was too small for the torque of the 900. I too had the clutch snap off along with fender and secondary damage @ about 1800 miles. Was lucky still under warranty so they replaced it with the 32mm crank kit. Think if I remember right the kit was about $800 from polarispartspitstop last I checked a couple years ago or you can go with indy dans tm1. Once the crank is 32mm then no problems afterwards. Now have 4500 miles and not a problem.

fix the crank and ride the heck out of it. had both my 9s break right around that mileage at the beginning of last season. fixed both and now they each have over 2000 miles of hard riding. totally worth it in my mind. even after parting it out, you cant by a newer sled for what it costs to repair the crank. plus its a whole lotta fun out climbin all these new sleds on the pos 900 :)
just my 2 cents

How about if its on engine #3 ???????

Part it ! its good money after bad on a sled that old.

Sled I got from you runs perfect Kreg, I think 900's just don't like you..lol

My 975 Turbo was running a 30mm crank with a triple bearing on PTO pushing over 300 hp. I don't believe the 30mm wasn't able to handle it. The belts breaking and bending the crank before they came out with better belts and the clutches were way out of balance on some of the sleds.

It's not worth parting out. What is a 900 with a bad engine worth as parts? Might make $1500 if you were extremely lucky. Just call IndyDan and have him send you a TM1 bottom end then send yours back as a core and ride it.

If you still want to ride, I have two sleds ready to go and I can let you borrow one if you want to meet up.

and as far as your pastic goes, there is a product on the market called Q-Bond, and you can repair any cracked or broken plastic as good as new in minutes-wear gloves, or you too will be part of the Belly Pan..lol

This is why I love the ole 900. So many fellow riders who still will stand by their hog and climb neck and neck with them new sleds. I love my 9. I get so many thumbs up and what the hell kind of exhaust you got on that thing!!! funny thing is I dont know what kind of can is on it. It doesnt have any markings on it. But it sure lets the horses outta the pen and makes a nice crisp braaaaaaaaaaaaaaaapp.

I am currently half way out the door and on my way to afghanistan for 9 months. I am about to pull the motor, and when I get back drop in a crank from IndyDan. And then she'll be ready to kick some butt..

Z-Man, thanks for the offer to ride your sled. But I fly out in a few days so my season is over. atleast I went out with a bang, Litteraly!!!!!

Rubber down, and shiny side up fella's and Ill keep in touch.

As you can see there are plenty of guys still wanting it, I say part it out. Its a mathematical decision, no guaranty = who knows whats next or if it happens again. Get the money and upgrade. IMO

the crank in that sled is worth more than the sled. You basically bought a TM3 and got the rest for free! :face-icon-small-con

I will stick with my Turbo! more power and -100+ LBS

Just so you feel better my buddies broke at 900 miles. Some dealer denied warranty because of " aftermarket mods "
Good reason to update plastic as well.

Who doesn't LOVE a 900?
