hey all...my dad just got a new honda EFI 500...it has 14 miles on it and im breaking it in...heres what im doing right now...im keeping it in 3rd gear slowly reving the throttle...never keeping a constant RPM...slowly reving the throttle on warm up...if i stop i let it cool off...then warm it up again never keeping a constant RPM...then take off and do the same thing again...the air temp is 11 above...anything else i should do?

Man this issue has been talked about a lot on this forum. Basically 2 ways to go. Slow and easy like you are doing it or much more abrupt. I have been breaking in my engines much faster because I am much more worried about getting a good ring seal than seating in the bearings etc. There is a great article by a guy called Motoman that goes into detail. Google it and make up your own mind. Or do a search on this site and you will see several threads that will answer your question.

ok thanks...can you post a link? i searched and nothing from SnoWest popped up

Hard to say. I would do it as Motoman says even with the 14 miles. No matter how you break it in it's still probably going to run good and last a long time. I just think the way he recommends is the best way. Maybe good for a little more power, a little less blow by. Good luck.

ok...what i did...is get the 4 wheeler up to speed...then hit half throttle held it and let go...through all the gears besides 1st...i hit the throttle to 3/4s and let go a few times...i hit the full throttle and let go a few times as well...but mostly half throttle and let go...should i be alright?

ok i have done more research....now does anyone know if the 7 first miles the engine was babied...would that glaze the cylinder? i dont know if they put synthetic oil in from the honda factory but...air temps were around 15 above F...i really want my rings to seat and get high compression with low oil consumption and low blow by...does anyone know if they use nikasil cylinder walls in the 2012 honda 500's? please more and more info...i dont want to have to get new rings and re-hone the cylinder wall...the 4 wheeler already has 23 miles on it...i started hard running it at around 16...any help would be appreciated

this is the ONLY place where anyone would respond to this thread...anywhere else NO ONE would have even bothered to look

No one would look at it on an ATV forum, or the atv section of this forum, what sense would that make..... Its a honda 500, just ride it, those things are bulletproof and don't need to be babied.

so how do i know if 4 stroke oil is fully synthetic...my gas station only has shell 10w 40...im not good with 4 strokes...is this synthetic?

Unless something has changed, Honda does not use a synthetic oil at the factory. My suggestion for break-in would be to ride it. Just the way you will for as long as you own it. RPM restrictions and break-in guidelines are there for the MFG to cover their asses. IF, there is a component that is going to fail, it is better to have 500 miles on your machine when your warranty expires than 50. Also, Honda's extended warranty is just that, Honda's. They don't use any aftermarket companies to underwrite the warranty and you ge the same coverage you would under the factory with very few exceptions. (light bulbs, battery, etc.)

And don't use Shell oil. Not in your ATV. You won't put ATV oil in your car, don't put car oil in your ATV. Run the Honda GL4 or HP4 if you want synthetic.
