Bow Hunting

I want to get into the sport of bow hunting... Just recently moved to Colorado from Iowa. Unfortunately I was never into the sport while living in Iowa. Since I have moved my interest really has picked up. I want some insight from you bow hunters out there about what brands are good and what would be a good 1st bow for me to get. I know Matthews and Hoyt are quality brands... any info will help.

Thanks

Bow tech is also a good one~ but try them before you buy~ Get the one that fits you~~ and feels right~ you will know instantly~ kinda like a girl and diamonds!

I shot a Matthews DXT and love the hell out of it but it is time to upgrade for me. I'm going to stick with Matthews because of the short axle to axle length. But you will have to shot a few and see what works well for you. Good luck with the sport it is very addicting getting that close to the critters and them not having a clue your there.

I have a bow tech for target and a browning for hunting~ both are really good~

Bow

I have a Bow tech General. Great bow! It is my first real bow ( i am still trying to get something with it) not the bows fault :face-icon-small-hap

Love my Mathews! No hunting like bow hunting! The things you'll see and hear is unbelievable.

It can be done cheap, and it can become very expensive.

Definitely go shoot a bunch of bows at a place that can get you setup with the right bow. I shot a bunch, and bought what felt the best...

Also, keep in mind where you buy and where you live. If you need parts or service, it's a good idea to be close to your dealer, or one that can get you what you need.

Start looking, good time of year to find deals, and you'll get a full off-season to practice.

since you are new & if you dont have a friend with bow experiance, then i would suggest finding a good pro shop close to you.the tricky part is finding a good one ,ask around & once you have found a good shop go try what they carry.really you cant go wrong with most of them now, bowtech, hoyt, mathews, pse.elite, bear, new breed, martin, obsession, expedition, strothers, oh & thats not all of them:face-icon-small-hap.the one thing i recomend to new shooters is dont get caught up in bow shop hype, you dont need the fastest or most exspensive.start with a bow that is over 32 inches axle to axle length & 7 inch brace height, they wont be the fastest but are usually more forgiving to shoot.one other thing start with a bow thats 55-65lbs no need to shoot 70 or more lbs these days unless you are going to africa.

All bows these days are great quality. Shoot at least a half dozen different bows to decide which one you like, and don't worry about having the lost expensive. I have a pse vendetta xl an absolutely love it. Whatever you buy, but it soon and make a deal with yourself that you will practice every single day until season, you owe it to the animal. It doesn't matter if it is one arrow shot inside your house, you just need to get the proper form. Also an archery lesson is a great idea

Finding a pro shop is a good decision, but they could also try to talk you into buying a bow you don't need. There are the big three (Hoyt, Matthews and Bowtech) but there are other brands that can be had for half the price of those 3 that will more than get the job done. I personally shoot a Knightmare made by Obsession Bows. They are spendy. PSE is a good intro bow. Hoyt has some good entry level bows as well. The key is to find one that shoots well for you and HAVE IT TUNED FOR YOU. Don't just buy a bow off the shelf and expect it to shoot amazing. You have to do your part. Practice and practice some more.

Bow hunting is not just about shooting the bow. It's an art. Getting close to animals will take time, and plenty of patience. It took me a long time before I actually shot an animal with my bow. This year I shot a mature Muley at 28 yards with my 8 year old son sitting next to me. No better feeling in the world.

Have fun!!!

I’m pretty much reiterating what has already been said. I’d shop at a proshop since they will set it up and tune it for you. I bought my last Hoyt at a bigger box store because they had it on clearance and wish I would have spent the extra money and went to the pro shop who would have taken the time to help me dial it in, the box store didn’t even paper tune it (mainly because they didn’t even offer to mount the rest). All the manufactures make great bows, I love my Hoyts but have heard really good things about PSE’s and you can’t beat their price. I would shoot a few brands though and find out what fits you the best. I started archery hunting 12 years ago, haven’t rifle hunted since.
