boondocker turbo using oil.

is it normal to have to add oil every few rides to the turbo oil res? i know it says only 16 0z but i get nervous not being able to check it with only 16oz in there because it so far down in the res, so i have been filling it up just a little more so i can touch it with my finger. But like i said every few rides its way back down and i have to add some... also when i park the sled in the garage to melt off the water dripping out of the bottom from the turbo side is oily, as is the side panel. I have looked high and low trying to find a leak. any ideas? its an o9 BD turbo M8

If it's the BD turbo kit with the baffled oil reservoir, if you overfill it, it will leak. I would bet that is what is happening if you're seeing it after riding. It ought to be pretty obvious if the lines to and from the pump are leaking .... I mean you should be able to see the residue from somewhere i think.

You will have to add oil sometimes to the turbo reservoir, but I found on mine that about every 4rd ride is when I'd have to add just a touch. You will lose a little oil no matter what .... You should be filling the reservior to the upper mark on the dipstick, but not any more.

mine has no dipstick. and ya there is residue on the lines, also residue on the top of the res, looks like it could be coming from the joint there between the turbo and the res, also looks like it may leak slightly around the filter. i will try some new clamps and see. so whats the best way to check it with no dipstick?

just make one. piece of coat hanger or whatever. put the required 16 oz in stick something in and mark it.

made a dipstick like was suggested...turned out i probably doubled what was supposed to be in there. im going to clean it really good and see if that fixes the prob. question tho.. what causes the lines and the joint on top of the res to leak if overfilled? probably a dum question but i thought a sealed system was just that..sealed. and also if the sled isnt leaking any and its still going thru a little where is it going?

Mine leaked a few drops of oil a day from the oil tank side of the inline oil filter. I replaced the hose clamps, and that fixed my issue.

I don't see any leaks on mine but I can smell oil after being on boost, does the turbo consume a bit of oil?

Sealed system, but it has to expand.

I have the old non-baffled oil reservoir also. As it heats up, it has to expand somewhere. It is either going to push the oil out through the bearing into the turbo intake or it's going to find another way out. Mine must push some air out around the seal at the top of the reservoir since it's a little dirty there. Either way, I have ridden 400+ miles each season without adding any oil before anual change for 3 seasons.

I ordered a Vented fill cap for the tank I just built to help solve this problem. I got it from www.bungking.com this was the simplest way I could find to vent the tank
