Bolt broken on primary that screws in tower??

Hey guys i was going to change the spring on my primary when i saw a 1 bolt missing out of the six on the cover that holds the primary spring in. I looked and there is a piece in the hole still, any suggestions how to get it out:confused:. I am wondering if it will hurt anything if i ride with it like that till i get home to fix it?:confused: Thanks guys:beer;
 
Buddy has this same problem. We've tried just about everything we could to get it out and it's still stuck in there. We even snapped an ez out off attempting to remove it. I think he's still riding his sled to this day like that, and that must have been 2 years ago.
 
You are at extreme risk running an unballanced, damaged component that spins at 8000 rpm. I have heard of people losing fingers when the clutch comes apart and pieces fly through the hood. I would inspect the clutch closely for what could have damaged that bolt and if their are any cracks. Bolted joint theory says that if the bolt does not break during installation, it will not break unless joint the bolt hold together physically separates. For this to happen in a clutch, significant loads that the clutch was not designed to take could have occured.

Once you determine the clutch is not damaged, easy outs or reverse drills can remove the bolt. Maybe with the clutch cover off, you can grab it with pliars. Bolts usually fail at the first thread.

That sucks. I'd be careful riding it like that, if the other one goes you'll have a pretty big problem. The other bolt is under more load now. I would try an easy out and a little heat to see if it would come out. Sometimes when I break a bolt like that just running the drill in and then reversing it slowly is enough to get it to break loose. Good luck.
 
I had the SAME problem with my '07 M1000... I just got a tiny drill, then pulled it out with an easy-out.

Seeing as I recently had a crank break on an RMK, I opted to ride REAL easy the rest of the day I noticed it. -removed/replaced it before riding again. I was concerned about the clutch being out of balance & possibly breaking the crank during a BIG pull.

My primary has the remnants of a broken bolt in one of the towers. There is enough meat behind it to get a shorter bolt in, so I guess that's what the previous owner did. I didn't even notice it until I took the primary apart for the first time. I tried for hours to get it out but it won't budge in my case. Got 500 miles on it without any issues.

Take the clutch off & take to a machine shop & they can remove it for u.In most cases at my shop an easy out broken off in there causes me more work & costs u more money.

What kind of special tool do you need to take that main bolt off to get the primary off?
 
a socket to take the bolt out and then a clutch puller..rent one from your dealer or get him to pull it off and then you take it to machine shop...i would use left hand drill bit and a bit of heat if you want to fix it yourself...sounds like you have a decent hole started if you broke an easy out..

Yes left hande drill bits work,but its the tendency of getting them off center when doing it by hand,then u have a hole that will more than likely have to be helicoiled , then a balance job is in order,just more time & money in the long run.Not saying it cant be done just saying what the best guaranteed outcome will be.
 
I broke 2 off in the same clutch. The e-z out worked on one of them, and the second wouldn't budge. Luckily it was broken off with enough room to thread a shorter bolt in, so I stacked it. I've got another clutch as well, problem is I can't get the set screw out of one of my cutler adjustable weights so I continue to use the clutch with the stacked bolt.
 
Thanks guys for all the help i got the broken bolt out with the drill, and while it was apart noticed that my rollers on the spider were $$$$$$ and my weights too. Replaced spider and weights had her out to test yesterday running awsome!!:D Thanks for the help:D:beer;

put a heat gun or small torch on that set screw while you try to turn it out.
