First off… special thanks to Smitty and crew for the rescue today out of the s__ hole. I would (actually the sled) would still be there if they had not come to the rescue… BETTER THAN AAA!!!!
We rode out of Rose (NicBro, NicBro son-in-law, daughter, and me). Down low the snow was wet and not very good. At about 55-5700 feet the snow was pretty good... a little powder and generally a lot of fun. When the wind blew it was strong. Light snow all day. A zillion riders on the mountain; the groomer groomed to Misery cabin and then I guess broke down. I heard the trails on the Cloverland side are rough.
Snow is at 5.5 feet at the marker. Hamburgers are $6 at the cabin… support the snowmobile club.
Now back to the rescue. We had been climbing the hillclimb (over by Diamond Peak), all over the Troy road and it was pretty easy. We had been riding and decided to go out to the S___ hole and Brian and I decided to go down into the untracked drainage. Soon as we dropped over I knew we were in trouble. My Simmons skis would break through a crust and actually trap the skis and stop the sled from going downhill. The stucks for both of us started. Brian got further down the hill and got his sled turned around and pointed out. He made several runs at the hill and was not making it even when poaching his line. We had a conference as we had been in the hole for an hour now. We decided if one of us got out send NickBro and daughter to the cabin and maybe get some help. Brian made another run and broke over the top with his Dragon. I made several more runs at the top but either got stuck or had to eyebrow out. It was now getting late and I had about 40 minutes of daylight left. I got my sled out from a bad stuck and I realized I was exhausted. I was now making errors on climbing and little things were making me screw up. I rode ½ back down and started figuring out the next plan. I finally decided to make one more run at the hill and if not successful walk out to the top. CRAP!
About that time the cavalry, led by Smitty showed up and started building me a freeway out… but I was done. Several more runs and one more bad stuck and I turned the sled over to Smitty to ride out. He too got stuck but further up the hill and with Smitty and company they put the sled back on the level and with a ski pull I was out. I then waited at top as everyone got out (yea some of the cavalry got stuck too). Main message, I really appreciated the help that Smitty and all of the other snowmobilers that came to help... very much appreciated.
I was amazed at the E-tec and Pro X sleds... I am sold… come next year I will have a new sled as on those sleds they went E V E R Y W H E R E!!!
