Blown chaincase

The other day, my buddy blew out the case on a 98 RMK. Pretty much the whole bottom including the cover lip.
The chain/gears and axles bearing were all good.
Did notice the bottom gear bolt had sheared the head off. Not sure how the bolt would break, but after years of on/off, it probably got weak.
Wondering if this head and the washer were floating around in there, until it finally got wedged just the right way and blew the case apart? Sound like the cause?? It's pretty simple in there, so is there anything else to look for?

The only good part, was able to ride the machine out 24kms under it's own power.

sounds like you found your problem....:face-icon-small-con I have seen those sprocket bolts weaken just from a constant on/off of changing gears...I know I snapped the one on my 98 RMK torquing it down to the factory spec with my known good torque wrench!:face-icon-small-sho

I had them break on both of our 98 rmk 600 sleds. I think polaris had a bad batch of bolts because mine were not the only ones that broke. I never reused one of them bolts after that.
