Big Horns or Snowies

Hey guys looking to make another trip out west sometime in mid to late Feb and would like to go to either the big horns or snowies because they are a little closer. Which would you recommend and where are the best places to stay?

Have only been to west yellowstone before and we don't have the best sleds so we aren't looking for anything to extreme just some nice open areas to play in and some smaller hills to climb.

Thanks in advance for any input,
Tim

I grew up riding the Big Horns. I have rode the Snowies the last 12 years. For what it sounds like you are looking for I would go the Big Horns. Tons of great parks, lots of open country around the trails. Ranger Creek Ranch is a great place to stay. Bear Lodge is also great. Make the ride between the 2 places. The Snowy Range is great, but its much steeper, lots more timber, there will be lots more snow right now. Much less forgiving if you don't know your way around. If you are looking for fun without extreme, Big Horns. PM me I would be happy to answer any questions. Stuck at home today when I should be GONEHUNTNPOWDER.

High Country Lodge, Big Horns

I am partial to the High Country Lodge in the north end of the Big Horns because, there are no crowds like at Bear Lodge, and the riding can be as tough or as easy as you like. It should be an overnight at least. Its got cabins for $100 that sleep 8. Its $20 @ extra over 6. Rooms are $100 plus meals. Usually just a very few people there. I can answer any other questions you might wish to ask about this area. You can ride to Bear Lodge on a groomed trail in 30 minutes for the best buffet out here. Try the Bald Mountain area here.

I fly over the Bighorns nearly every week, fairly low usually as well.

I wish the Snowies looked like the Horns. There is so much untracked snow in the horns it's amazing. They have ton's of riding above timberline without the Rocks we have. It is fairly flat up there also which we don't have in the Snowies
I would say got to Sheridan and ride the north side it's full of snow now and if you go about 20 miles down that closed highway that goes west then turn south you will be the only one there.

I only have to drive like an hour to get to the Snowies but I would love to go to the Horns someday.

So it looks like the horns are the place to go atleast this year, I like that they are closer too. Thanks for all the input.

Av8er what did you mean when you said go to Sheridan and then go down the highway thats closed? Can you ride right from Sheridan or do you have to trailer them up a little way? Also which closed down highway are you talking about?

I assume he meant go up to Bear Lodge and then go down hwy 14 which is closed.

So theres plenty of powder in up by bear lodge? I talked to the service place thats right there by bear lodge this morning and she was warning me that it has been unseasonably warm, and the snow is hard and packed right now? Im planning on being up there beginning of next week, if anyone has been out riding that area real recently could you post an update?? Im sure it would be a huge help. Thanks!

yes its true about the warm weather and hard pack snow its about -2 in sheridan right now and last week was in the mid 60s i was there this last weekend and every weekend. infact the snow sucks right now yes theres lots of it but the weather has not been very snowmobiler friendly the last week and 1/2. you can find some ok snow and still have a good time but looks like the snowies would be a better bet for fresh stuff

There's plenty of powder still, we've had about half a foot over the past few days, on top of the 3.5 feet that were still there! I keep hearing the better snow is south of burgess junction, so that would be where we are! We've never had so much snow this time of year, at least not for the past 15-odd years. Definitely the place to go!!! If you want to see how much we have, we post a new pic on our snowcam every day. The fence you see out there is 4 feet high. There's a pic on there today that doesn't show any snow, but check it out again tomorrow and you'll see what I'm talking about!
