Well this morning I can see a little bit of the white stuff up top from Sheridan....and they are saying its finally going to get cold this week! Hopefully not long!

I'm new to the Horns....don't they remain closed till November? where do you guys do your test riding? Can you ride logging roads?

closed means you just cant ride so many feet off trail ....i just dont remember how many......as long as your not digging threw and tearing up the ground they dont seem to mind..

You are legal as long as you have a current sticker and stay on the roads, no off road until November 15th.

Alright! where did they get 5 in.? if they get another 5 Ill be up there but 5 might not be enough for me! Thanks for the 411 on riding too!

Remember that October is hunting season too. So you still have a lot of hunters on the roads in trucks and on ATVs. Legal to ride off road on a sled after November 15th. Wheeled vehicles can travel up to 300 feet off road unless they cause damage to the ground. Of course depending on what Forest Service person you talk with, 300 feet means several things. Some say that is the total distance you can travel off road, IE there and back. Some say you can go up to 300 feet from the roadway, one way.

looks like the southern horns could get a couple feet up till sunday

A MAJOR CHANGE TO COLDER AND SNOWY WEATHER IS HEADED FOR MUCH OF
CENTRAL AND WESTERN WYOMING THURSDAY NIGHT THROUGH SUNDAY...

A COLD STORM SYSTEM OVER THE GULF OF ALASKA IS FORECAST TO DROP INTO
THE GREAT BASIN ON THURSDAY AND THEN STALL OUT OVER THE SOUTHERN
IDAHO...NORTHERN UTAH AREA FRIDAY INTO SATURDAY...MOVING SLOWLY
NORTHEAST THROUGH SUNDAY. AT THE SAME TIME...COLD AIR WILL PLUNGE
SOUTHWARD OUT OF CANADA PROVIDING FOR STRONG UPSLOPE EAST OF THE
DIVIDE...ESPECIALLY THURSDAY NIGHT THROUGH SUNDAY. SNOW WILL LIKELY
DEVELOP IN THE MOUNTAINS BY THURSDAY NIGHT...POSSIBLY BECOMING HEAVY
AT TIMES AND CONTINUING THROUGH SUNDAY MORNING...THEN TAPER OFF
THROUGH SUNDAY EVENING. THE MOST SIGNIFICANT MOUNTAIN SNOWFALL WILL
LIKELY BE OVER THE WIND RIVER MOUNTAINS...EAST SLOPE OF THE
ABSAROKAS...OWL CREEK AND BRIDGER MOUNTAINS...SOUTHERN BIG HORNS AND
CASPER MOUNTAIN.

THE LOWER ELEVATIONS OF CENTRAL AND SOUTHWEST WYOMING WILL ALSO HAVE
THE POTENTIAL FOR SIGNIFICANT SNOWFALL FRIDAY THROUGH SUNDAY. THE
FIRST PIECE OF THIS SYSTEM WILL BRING AN INCREASING CHANCE OF RAIN
SHOWERS TO THESE AREAS THURSDAY. COLDER AIR AND INCREASING UPSLOPE
FLOW WILL DEVELOP THURSDAY NIGHT AND FRIDAY WITH RAIN CHANGING OVER
TO SNOW. THE CODY FOOTHILLS WILL LIKELY SEE RAIN CHANGE OVER TO
SNOW BY SUNRISE FRIDAY AND POSSIBLY THE LANDER FOOTHILLS. IT
ALSO APPEARS THAT OTHER AREAS SUCH AS THE WIND RIVER BASIN AND LOWER
ELEVATIONS OF JOHNSON COUNTY WILL ALSO SEE RAIN CHANGE OVER TO SNOW
DURING THE DAY FRIDAY INCLUDING RIVERTON AND BUFFALO. CASPER WILL SEE
A COLD RAIN OR RAIN AND SNOW MIXTURE FRIDAY...POSSIBLY CHANGING OVER
TO ALL SNOW BY AFTERNOON. ALL AREAS WILL SEE SNOW FRIDAY NIGHT AND
QUITE POSSIBLY THROUGH THE DAY SUNDAY.

SNOWFALL AMOUNTS ARE STILL UNCERTAIN BUT THE POTENTIAL FOR 6 TO 12
INCHES OF SNOW DOES EXIST ACROSS THE LOWER ELEVATIONS EAST OF THE
DIVIDE AND IN THE UPPER GREEN RIVER BASIN. LOCALLY HIGHER AMOUNTS
ARE POSSIBLE NEAR THE MOUNTAINS AROUND CODY...BUFFALO...CASPER...
LANDER AND THERMOPOLIS. THE EAST SLOPE OF THE WIND RIVER
MOUNTAINS...THE OWL CREEK AND BRIDGER MOUNTAINS...THE SOUTHERN END OF
THE ABSAROKA MOUNTAINS...THE SOUTHERN BIG HORNS AND CASPER MOUNTAIN
MAY SEE ONE TO TWO FEET OF SNOW.

Um if that doesnt get ya jazzed up I don't know what will!!!!!!
What is the source of this weather info?

ok heres the deal on the 300' thing you can only do so for camping, firewood and hunting(game retrival) so with the usfs becoming more demacratic and enviromently friendly i would ride off road for 300' at your own risk. you can not travel off road with a snowmobile untill the16th. you can however stay on the roads ,same rules as the a.t.vs as long as you have your sticker. now for the bad news ther is not 5 inches of snow on the horns north or south i have been up there every day for work over both passes and only a skiff was the most i seen ,but its freezing every night so the ground should be cooling off for this next storm. let it snow.

So basically aside from riding roads and trails, Horns aren't open for riding until Nov.16th. I can live with that. Need to do some road riding to break-in and check setup on new motor anyway.
