big avy in snowies 3/08/09

Yes, East/SE Side of Rock Creek Knoll. Myself and 2 other riders were playing in the trees below the knoll not more than an hour before this happened Sunday. That face was ready to go with all the wind-loading. Glad no injured.

it slid on some guys probally 4or 5 years ago also it gets wind loaded something ferice

I saw the remains of a good sized slide there last year, toward the middle of the hill and later last season I saw the remains of a larger avvy toward the south end, where the scree came over the ledge and well down into the little bowl at the bottom, almost reaching the trees.

The little bowl is where people would typically park to watch people climb so it gave me newfound respect for that hill.

You are lucky- were any of you guys riding above one another? I heard that is one of the biggest problems- if you ride above one another you can set off the slide on your buddies

Pretty sure that hill slides every year. No place to hide, either. Haven't seen a real thick break on it, myself, but would expect it can (and does). Watched it break on a rider last year. Same thing- about a 12" depth on the break, but wasn't as wide as the one in those pics, and didn't run much past the ledge- broke a bit lower, as I recall. Fun hill to play on, but dangerous. Lots of wind loading. Looks like the run-out on that one covered up the ledge- that's a lot of snow. Glad no one was hurt.

Glad to hear that everyone was OK.
Did you happen to note how deep the fracture was and what layer the snow slid on.
I dug a snow pit near the ski area last sun and in spite of the snow pack "looking solid" I got an easy "Q1" shear about 20 inches down in the middle of what looked solid. This shear appeared to be on a surface hoar layer from some of the clear nights about a month ago.
