Better Late then Never!!

Glad I didn't know you were going to AF. I would have offered to tag along. I wish someone would document the technical difficulty of each trail up there. I ride a lot with my wife and don't know that area all that well. I am scared to death I will get her in a situation that is compromising to her enjoyment. Good to hear all went well. I don't know anyone that liked the first ride on a new bike. tweek tweek. Oh yeah, any pics? I bet not, single track is tough to stop and capture the moment.
Ron

I took a couple mainly of us parked nothing to spectacular, A couple picture really explain how the day went. One of me about an hour into the ride all smiles and then another about 5 hours later looking like death.
I will try and get those up in the a.m.

80ish hrs is maybe 16 days of riding, stay calm danialson....it will come

yup the 05 is worse then the 06 as the 06 had a big change in the engine and carb.

O-ring chain? my new chain is tight as heck and the plastic guides look good

The real issue is riding in the sand, you are always at WFO if you want to get up the hills and this is what eats the valves.....oh well, id rather eat parts then chill in my shop waxing my boggie wheels like mr ACMtnCat.....;)

O-ring chain will last much longer and is a must IMO.
X-ring is a narrow(er) version of an O-ring chain.

I think your right about the sand... Although we ride it a lot and have had pretty good luck with the 4 bangers.
We run a scorpion cross tire which is a knobby tire shaped kind of like a paddle... Works real well and corners better than a paddle tire.

After talking to some honda techs, they say that the majority of bikes with issues have been running paddle tires.
I'm guessing the constant load and revs is not good on the engine.

Wow what an Adventure today. what was suppose to be a 3 hour quick break in ride turned into one beast of a ride.

We started at the Tibble Fork Damn around 10:30am and busted up 41 and then dropped down to 40 and followed 40 until we hit 157. Then we took 157 all the way to the pole line pass. That is a really fun and fairly fast ride.

We then decided to head back south west down 157 until we hit 83.
Trail 83 seem like a great longer trail, it was one of the few that I have never been on due to hitting it to early in the years and always getting stopped by snow drifts

83 was a blast with very few rocky areas to start with and you could keep a decent speed threw the first half. It takes you behind and then over Mill Peak. But once you get about 3/4 of the way up the trail it had a really rocky side hill and then it got really steep, really rocky and had about 6"-8" of silt. THIS KICK MY ARSE big time.
And after a few blown corners and a couple trips over the handle bar I was DONE! I didn't care if we were only 30 yards from the top I was not climb the rest of the way out. So I decided to turn it around and go back down the gnarly, rocky, loose, and silty beast that I just spent a few hours trying to climb out of. I was so worked after we got back to 157 that I just wanted to hit the main road back at the Sandy Baker pass and took the road back in to Tibble fork. Overall a GREAT ride.

Now for the bike, it faired a lot better then I did. Ran pretty good but couldn't idle worth a damn and struggled a bit on the bottom end, but what can you expect from a stock bike. I definitely saw a need to jet it and I am looking forward to the air mixture screw and the re gear as well. The stock tires hooked up real well but I will need a new rear tire soon. As I tore this one up pretty good on the first ride. The bike still is in great shape but I did manage to knock a little of that new shine off it.:D

Moral of the story, Stay away from trail 38. Or at least if you are going to ride it drop down it from the top of 157 near rock springs and don't try and climb out of it because it really sucked. But if any of you do ride that trail and tear it up. Then more power to you.

PS - only ride the 38 from rock springs NORTH to sandy baker pass...
I could have told you that! Only after a good soaking rain storm when the trail is firm and tacky will I ride it from the north to the south. There are a couple really scary parts on that trail, but riding from south to north is ok. Ive done it alone more than a few times.

A great variation on this (going south to north) is to take the unmarked trail about half way (lundeen creek) and follow it all the way down to the dirt road in the bottom (provo deer creek dirt road) and then head north on it for 1/2 mile then come back up the 37 (which is probably my 2nd favorite trail up there) to sandy baker pass.

Another trail to avoid is riding the 157 SOUTH from dry fork to pole line pass. NASTY NASTY switchbacks. Riding this from pole line pass north to dry fork is still a challenge, but coming from the north to the south is just ridiculous!

Also the 39 is tough. I would recommend riding it from west to east (tibble fork road up to the 172 junction) and not the other way

The 151 out of wooley hole up to the ridge gets pretty nasty. Large loose rocks on top of 4 inches of that silty loose crap.

I have a few other secret trails here and there that arent on the maps. If you are planning a ride and want details on the trail let me know, chances are i have ridden that trail many, many times :)

Thanks for the heads up Phatty.

Yep 38 sucked. I don't know why I keep saying 83 but then again I don't really recall much after I got home yesterday. I was pooped!

From Rock springs headed down the 38 would not be so bad. It's still loose and steep but a lot more manageable then going up it. I have been riding AF for about 8 years and feel I know it pretty well but the 38 is one of the few that has alluded me until yesterday. It will be a while until I try and conquer that trail again going south.

37 is a blast. it gets pretty silty and a little loose towards the top but the bottom 3/4 is a blast to ride.

I have also run 157 from the trail head near Timpooneke all the way past the Ant Knolls and up to Sunset peak and that is quite the ride. it gets pretty hairy once you get closer to sun set peak but I have run that trail many times. But your right it is a Beast towards the top.

I was suffering yesterday due to not being well hydrated prior to the ride and did not bring enough fluids with me. Plus I haven't done much more then a few hundred rounds of ring around the roses and patty cake this summer, so I was definitely not physically ready for 38. I need to get out more and get that riding endurance back so that I can bomb those trails like years past.

I'm thinking Green River this weekend. I feel like running some washes and with the cooler temps expected it should be a great weekend down there.

Hatch forget cascade, lets do Green River? There is a lot more open parking for your oversized tow behind beer cooler down there.:D

dude you better let me know sometime saturday so we square up a plan, the plan is lil sahara earlyish on sun/camp/mon if you dont call....some quad wadd riders should also be in the group, we got plenty of firewood already:beer;

Good point, I think my hour guess was a little off. We put 20 hours on it just this weekend in the dunes. So lets see, just about every two weeks, mostly all sand, so high load, 10-20 hours from April through September X 2 Seasons.......hmmm..I was WAY off.

Still not a hiccup, besides a 260 lbs buddy of mine destroying my paddle tire.

Jac - no worries dude, the weather was horrid all day on sunday, we stayed in the trailer and got chit faced, later in the night it cleared up for an hour or so.....and we got to watch a stupid drunk kid play golf with a shovel and a 5 gallon can of gas that was on fire, i could only watch and wait for the burning fuel to spray his pants and shirt, the best part was his 10 or so buddies just watched as he played with death of 3rd degree burns, man stupid peolpe worry me:confused:

im on call next weekend, so the weekend after next is the show down, the mighty honda vs the wounded duck yami......leave your pride at home;)

all in all, the new bike is perfect for me, the jetting is way lean and needs a smaller pilot and main, hell i had to adjust the fuel mix screw all the way up and rev the idle screw up to stop it from dieing....is it dealer prep or factory sea level jetting?....who knows, but its still BS to me:mad:

JSCC - I was on a white one industries camo honda and my friend on a blue yami and a few firends on "quad wuads".....the guy on the yami can jump big i tend to cheer on the sideline:face-icon-small-win, did you see us? or did i see you?

I am a sideline jumper aswell. If I get over 5 feet off the ground it didnt happen on purpose, lol!

I seen a ton of machines, so I am not sure who was who. However, I ride St Anns mostly, and that was where I was this weekend. You?
