best side hiller?

I thought that vid was great.I think that a good rider can side hill anything, but sounds like the cat m series and pro rmk are the best at side hilling.I can side hill my 11 x e-tec great but from past riding the m 1000 2009 it was way easier to hold it up,it just didnt fight so much. But the doo will out clime in a heartbeat might not be much but it will out clime.

:focus: It is directly correlated to what you ride every day. I can hold my 900 King cat on edge til the cows come home-especially after eliminating the 26lb suitcase from the right side & installing a Cutler can. But I jump on a rev, a Rx-1, or an edge & once ya got the "art" down pat...any aforementioned could be #1. Some sleds need more attention & carressing, obviously. I think once you learn the sleds respective traits...any one can easily hold edge.:tongue:

I'm surprised the Ski-Doo ZX chassis is so highly ranked. I rode one a couple years ago and I thought the wide running boards tended to lift the track up and out of the snow causing it to wash out and slow down. My Edge compared to the ZX, both 700's with 144" tracks, would side hill considerably better since the running boards narrow up as they go back allowing the sled to lay over farther before interfering with the track depth (didn't lift the rear of the track up out of the snow).

Gen II? I had a '99 and didn't care for it too much. Seemed awful heavy to hold over on its side compared to the edge.

Cat 1M chassis. My king cat would hold a line all day long. That is about the only thing it does better and easier then my M series.

agree. 04 mountain cat/1M does excellent job holding sidehill all day and you can slow it down speed it up and stay right on line. i know the M8 i have is better machine but i have to admit i just still like the feel of that ole 1M in powder/boondocking! i guess i'm just stuck in the past!

Whatever ya got.

As stated earlier, its what you have. If you look at the posts in this thread you will see that most guys recommend sleds they owned or own. If you bought a 1M and rode it all the time and then jumped on a ZX for all of 10 minutes you would do far better on your 1M compared to that ZX because you have the 1M chassis traits patterned into your muscle memory. All will be good after you get used to them. If I HAD to say which one is best for sidehilling, for all ranges of riders (have not ridden a 1M before) I would say a ZX and this is coming from an EDGE owner. I find ZXs to be lighter and respond more to rider input versus the EDGE and I have enough time on a ZX to be comfortable and know the traits and the ZX have very advanced motors for their era of chassis. If your a bigger guy (170 and up) I would recommend the EDGE because you get stability from the wider stance when climbing yet the rider has enough weight to control the sled when things get twisty and there is way more aftermarket support for the EDGE than the ZX. I have a GEN2 also and it compares very heavily to a ZX as far as rider input reaction and the way the weight of the sled feels and I can jump from the EDGE to the GEN2 and pull the same line, if your on a tight budget get a GEN2. As far as the 1M goes I can only speculate, I think it would be much like the EDGE, I have never ridden one so who knows. Thats my $0.02. PM8.

Gen2 is easier to ride and make the sled respond than the edge for me. The edge seems to have a mind of its own and doesn't want to go on one ski for me, as with every xp i've ridden. Can't say anything for the zx or 1m but I can go from my dragon to the old gen2 and still have a ton of fun going anywhere my usual riding group will go albeit with a lot more effort.

In the end its all seat time that will determine what you can do with a given sled. (for the most part, pro chassis excluded:face-icon-small-coo) I went out and put 95 miles on an indy lite deluxe 340 fanner last saturday and made that thing carve for a constant 15 minutes in a snow filled crp field. :camera: Not like it was at a fast pace or laid over real hard but it was carving none the less.

By the way I'm only 5' 10" 150 on a heavy day.

I've been polaris diehard my whole life. I currently ride a gen 2. I've also owned a 800 escape. I'd take the gen 2 chassis handling wise over the edge any day. As stated above the edge handles like an xp, when its on its side it goes straight. When a gen 2 rolls over it turns that way.

x2 kinda get a tear in my eye when i think of my old 1m900 it was easier to hold a line on a side hill for sure i think the m8 is almost too easy to lay over so to find that balance point takes a bit of practice

zx by far. with the edge in second place. ive owned them all except the 1m. any and all sleds can be ridden on a sidehill even the rev. but the zx like the M8 it can be done sitting down with part throttle and even sidehilled down hill with ease also still comfortable in low snow conditions.

I have a 02 edge I have To say that it is pretty easy to side hill. But I have to agree it's all about the rider.

saying that about one of the worst sleds I've ever tried to sidehill... wow.

many good points about that machine... but it's ability to sidehill was a huge step backwards from the gen 2 imo.

side hillers

Narrow track and narrow ski stance and light as possible you can't go wrong.

None of the stock chassis for sale are as easy to sidehill as some of the mod sleds I'ave built and ridden. Get the running boards and front ends out of the snow, make it as tippy as a dirt bike then you can sidehill and throw the sleds aroun.

In 09 two kids from N california with modded XP's rented the cabin next to us in Island Park for the week. they wanted to jump off of everything. so we showed them a lot of good riding. they had 15" pclaw tracks, narrow front ends, more weight removed, made a tough sidehiller into a one handed no brainer, they plowed up Mt Jefferson for a week. That easy to entirely change the complexion of an XP.

1m no question!

Sidehill, one ski, u-turn on descents and carve better then my old gen 2(yuck), buddys edge, roomates m8 and my rev. I love them just for the those reasons alone. When I'm riding mine I always say "heck with climbing straight up, let's sidehill!"
