best powder skis?

I have a 1998 summit x 670 and it's handling is terrible. I am new to mountain sledding and this is my starter sled. On the trail, it darts. In the powder, it darts and the floatation is terrible. It rolls to the outside ski on turns in the powder and on the trail. It is mostly stock except the the stretched 151 track with a big wheel kit. Any suggestions on skis or suspension set up to improve the handling?

Thanks in advance.

SLP powder pros, Mountain sleds really dont trail very well. They just arnt built for it. Let out your limiter straps, put a little more tension on the front shock, and you should ahve a pretty good MOUNTAIN setup. IT wont like the trails though.

I love my SLP Powder Pros in the powder. NOt as much fun on the trail, but arguably the best handling ski in deep powder IMO. I would start there, and suck up the limiter as Rixster suggested because these skis are so aggressive.

A few years ago I was asking the same questions and this is what I heard. I have a Ski Doo Renegade and love riding off trail, but the rev skis stunk. The top two skis that were recomended are the SLPS and Simmons. Now I do some trail riding and I went with the Simmons and I could see and feel an instant improvement in the ride both on and off the trail. Hope this helps

You can fit a set off a REV on there. I put a set of 6.9 pilots on mine, worked great, I picked them up at a swap meet for $75. Look for a set of take off's from a newer sled. Spending $400 on a set of skis for a 10 yr old sled......? Save the money and buy a newer sled when you can afford it, get the cheapest option possible in the meantime. Seriously, the newer sleds are light years ahead of the old S-chassis sleds (but I still love my 98 :) ).

If you lengthen the limiter strap you will increase your approach angle which will give you less floatation in the powder but it will give you more ski pressure which will help turning. Only lengthen it long enough to get the sled to turn. Rixster is right, mountain sleds are not trail sleds, too much track to start with and the 151 on your sled will make it even harder to turn. You have to give up a little turning ability to make a better deep snow sled.

Skis

I have an 03 summit 800 that had, verbatum, the same problems you described. I ended up replacing the slightly bent lower arm assembly and dinking with the shocks. Biggest differerence, however, was simmons gen 1 skis. Almost completely eliminated trail weirdness and made woodeedoos feel almost nonexistent!!! But the best was on mountain performance. My sled has never handled soooo good. Very carvy but stable as well. I am very please with my simmons skis, and if you look around you can find them for a very good price. Pm if you need a good seller. I got mine new shipped to my door for $330. Hope that helps.

Thanks for the replies!

Why should i lose the sway/stabilizer bar? Mine currently does not have it but I have bought one to put it in it. My sled rolls to the outside ski and I thought replacing this would improve the roll.

As for the replies on limiter strap, I am getting mixed messages. Should I make them as long as possible? If I am hearing you correctly, this will put more weight on the skis to allow it to turn better but will sacrifice some floatation.

Currently, I am planning on buying some simmons or powder pros, putting in the stabilizer bar and lengthening the limiter straps... am I on the right path?

17 days until the next trip out west...

The stabilizer will help with the roll but that is why someone else took it out. Remember mountain sled or trail sled. Rarely the two shall meet. If you are riding mainly off trail then leave the bar out and stiffen the ski shocks. As to the skiis I would go with simmons.

Real solid advice

I would recommend the powder pros for any sled in deep riding conditions, however you really do not need to spend the dough at the moment. If you are planning on selling that sled...keep the skiis that you take off it and put them back on..(when you sell it). Buy a set of pilot skiis now as suggested or slp powder pros,...and keep them to put on your next sled.

I had the powder pros before...they darted on my sled as well....went to the simmons and love the ride up and in the powder as well.........02:D

what were those skis that Kelsley posted on here awhile back real good ski he said and the company who makes them gives you a 10 dollar check if you re-fer someone
cant remember the ski
anyone got an idea what it was

Trying not to spend $300 on a $2000 sled for skis.

these are for sale:

skidoo skis off 05 1000 will take 100$

Are these 6.9 pilots? and would these fit on my 1998 summit x? Is this a good buy?

thanks again

I have used mods on a couple of sleds and really liked them. I have friends that love the simmons. I tried the powder pro's on a polaris edge chassis and hated them from the minute I put them on right up until I put the stockers back on. I don't want to say they are a bad ski, but i think it depends alot on the sled. No amount of suspension adjusting could make them do what I wanted.
