Best place to stay when traveling to the Big Horns?

Bear is the easiest place to stay if you want to ride out of the lodge, but bear, elk view, and arrowhead are usually pretty booked up. Probably going to have to stay in sheridan and trailer up every day unless you book a long ways in advance.

Its almost worth staying in Buffalo at one of the many hotels and trailering up to Meadowlark just so you can eat at the Winchester steakhouse. Love that place.

But Bear, Elkview, or Arrowhead Lodges(All within like 2 miles of eachother, same ownership I believe) are probably the best places for convenience and all that. But if your ever in the Buffalo area after 5, be sure to eat at the Winchester.

Im guessing your going to the North Horns, so stay at bear lodge... Good food good people and gas and everything you need is there. They have a shop with some polaris parts there too. Elk view and arrowhead are also good. I would try to book in advanace like someone just said.

yep, winchesters is pretty awesome

If your going to the North end bear has the best night life and food. Other than that elk, arrowhead, and bear are pretty equal.

Not to hijack, but what is the difference between the south and north horns? I heard the north was steeper and had more snow, is this true?

I have been both north(once) and south(twice). Yes north is for the most part steeper and normally has more snow. BUT there are less people down south so it is much easier to find untouched. There are also a few good climbs in the south that most guys wouldn't touch. Theres a cool wide open area up top (theres a name for it, cant think of it) on the south side that can be real fun, lots of stuff to jump and some little drops. Last year when we were there the snow was chit and there was alotttt of landmines. Only two dowfalls of the south are the rocks, and the drive to the parking lot, but when they have a good base its totally worth it. Most people like the north better. I prefer the south.

About 10 years ago our crew stayed at Snow Shoe Lodge in the south horns. It was only accessable by sled and our group was the only people there for most of the week. Hands down the best place I have stayed during any snowmobile trip. Check it out!

Not a definiet line that seperates the two, since they are connected by a trail on the west side of the mountain, but there is a big canyon over there that kind of divides it. Other than that the south would be considered everything that you can access by highway 16 out of Buffalo or Worland (Battle Park, Powder River, Meadowlark, ect.). The North is everything that can be accessed from highway 14 or 14a out of Lovell, Dayton or Greybull (Granite Pass, Bald Mtn, Hunt Mtn Rd, Black Mtn, Old Antelope Butte Ski Resort, Red Grade ect.)

Now about steepness and all that depends where you go, the north end has a lot more open area and places to ride to get away from all the people that go up there. The south doesn't have as much area but still quite a bit and smaller crowds for sure. The snow levels tend to vary.

Snowshoe lodge i would consider the north horns because easier access from highway 14, is that place still open anymore? Went by there last year and it looks deserted.

Snowshoe is in the middle but nothing is open anymore, just Bear's 3 lodges and high country. Arrowhead is the last resort and is last to fill up. Beds are shot and only burgers to eat. Elkhead has the best rooms and beds and Bear has the best food and lively bar scene. Haven't been to high country for a long time, but you have to haul all your stuff in by sled to get there.

High country seems like its closer to the "good stuff". Arrowhead had good food when we were there as did bear. Elkhorn/head did have great rooms, but the staff(mainly in the restaurant) are not particularly friendly and sometimes downright rude in my opinion, not to mention the food is pretty bleh. Staying at elkhead is fine, but try and avoid eatting there.

LOL it is the Elk VIEW. Have eaten there once and it was good. Bear and Elk View are the only ones with hot tubs and pools as far a i know as well.

Bear or elk view are good places if not there Sheridan and its a hour drive to ride

We usually stay in Sheridan at the Holiday Inn because we don't want to book a trip a month or two in advance. The lodges up top usually fill up that fast and if the snow sucks your screwed. The drive sucks every day, but its better than being stuck somewhere with horrible snow.

bearlodge is nice. has your gas, food. and trail permits.

elkview is nicer, but if i remember correctly they dont have wifi there. i know for some thats not a big deal. but when we go one of the guys with us teaches online college courses and has to check in on them every so often on the trip. so wifi is a must for us.

o and there is no cell service there.

I booked Bear

lodge for a few days in February about a month or so ago. Me and some friends stayed there last year in February and were satisfied with it. We actually drove to Elk View and ate dinner twice last year cause the Bear was pretty full. Found plenty of good riding off the trials in the Northen part. We drove South once and got about a mile or two before any of us clipped any land mines. Nightlife was good at the Bear on Friday & Saturday night, but Sunday night I think me and my buddies were the only ones in the bar. Fingers crossed for a bunch of snow, can't wait to head up there again!:beer;

Thanks for all the great information. Well will be staying in Sheridan, all the others that were suggested were full for the date we will be in the area!! It's our first time to the Big Horn!!
