best place to live and ride

i was wondering what the people of colorado think the best place to live is. is there anywhere in CO where you can live for reasonably cheap cost and have awesome riding still close by? also what are good job fields in colorado? Thanks

Depends on what you consider "cheap" and "close".
Two biggest growing job fields right now are in the oil and gas industry and in healthcare. Tourism is aways a safe bet but not very lucrative.
everything else will depend on the elections.
IMO, the western slope is cheaper and has better access than the front range.
But I'm sure that statement will elicit some arguments from the flat landers east of the divide.

Steamboat is cheap? I paid $2.59 a gallon for gas today, what did you pay in the boat SRN? Great little mountain town for sure, but cheaper and plenty of good jobs to be had ????? Sounds like you have a good paying job and can afford to live there, but if that was possible for everyone, then you'd have a loooooot of neighbors up there brother. Plain and simple, the economy just isn't there to support more than a few thousand people. Same for most mountain towns, that's why 95% of the population in CO lives on the Front Range!

Nothing wrong with the front range, except we can't be west slope snobs and pay 20% more for everything, but have jobs that pay the same or less as on the FR:D. On the FR you have plenty of jobs, better standard of living by far for the average joe and great sledding from 1 to 3 hours away. The west slope gets the great snow....and I can jump in the truck and drive there in a few hours whenever I want:D Now, if I could ride from my door into some great riding I'd sacrifice some for that, but 90% of the west slopers are down in the valleys where that's not happening anyway, and getting a place up on the hill is outside of most people's means, or it takes a "special sort" to put up with the drawbacks of living in that environment. In the end, it comes down to how far you're willing to trailer to the good stuff and what standard of living you want.

I don't live in the boat anymore. Too expensive, too many expatriated Califorincators. Moved to Junction a while back. I never said Steamboat was cheap. I just asked him his idea of cheap and close. Junction is on of the few towns in CO that still has a reasonable economy. Still growing and still moderately priced. I can be on the Mesa in less than an hour. The Flat Tops, San Juans, Vail under 2, the Ears about 3. All without driving over a pass. And, I don't have to deal with the traffic. Also, this year I won't have to contend with 500 inches of snow in my driveway.
Not to mention that Moab is 90 mins away if I want a dual-sport weekend.
Want cheap and close to the mountains? Try Mesa. A few short miles to sledding and a 35 min drive to down town.

Grand County, believe it or not, has some decently cheap places to live and also tons of sick riding areas. Granby or Kremmling are pretty much the cheapest places for sure. Grand Lake has hundreds of miles of established trails. Church park is excellent, and there's tons of backcountry places in the western part of the county.

It is all a matter of preference. If you want to live in the mountains you deal with the issues. All areas have their pro's and con's. In my case I can leave work or home and be on the trail in 30-45 minutes. Buff, RE, Flatties. I can leave work at noon on a powder day and still get 3 hrs ridin in before dark. I don't care where you live, that kicks a##. I lived in the FR for 10 yrs and the mtns for 8 and I know that I am where I need to be.

flat landers east of the divide.

HAHAHA, Flatlanders east of the divide....now if you would have said east of the front range I could have let it go...but NOPE!

GJ is a hole, I've live in CO my entire life (GJ for 3 of them) dirty town and no closer then the front range to a plethora of riding.
GJ has less women, hot *** summers and barely gets any snow......if you like GJ you couldn't get a decent job anywhere else.

FYI- GJ Elevation is approx. 4600 ft.....I live in Morrison now @ 5800 ft(front range)...now who's the flatlander??

:D:beer;:beer;

I'm quite glad that you prefer to live on the front range. To each their own.
You can't begin to compare the quality of life of most of the areas east of the divide to the western slope. The deplorable air quality is frequently the worst in the NATION. The violent crime rate is also some of the highest in the country. Traffic is a joke and the roads are always in disrepair. Denver was shut down for almost a week last years by a moderate snowfall.
I-70 is a parking lot Fridays and Sundays headed to and from the mountains.
A quick look at any number of web sites will show you that Denver has more (100degree +) days in the summer. Colder in the winter too. Hope you enjoyed all the hail storms and tornados last year.
The majority of the "plethora of riding" that you speak of is located west of the divide. Over at least one major pass, often several. I can ride dozens of awesome areas without crossing a single pass and without fighting traffic.
Less women.... show me the data. But then I'm happlily married, so I could care less.
I still own a small ranch just west of Steamboat. I hope to retire there.
My wife and I are both nurses. I am a Manager in Surgery and she is Director of Education. We were both recruited by several hospitals on the front range. We can pretty much live anywhere we want to. We choose to relocate here for many reasons.
By all means, PLEASE convince your friends to live near you.
Have a couple more beers.

Front RANGE ROCKS!!!!!!!!!!!!

I recommend:

Monument
Colo Springs
Pueblo
Longtucky-Longmont-safe and full of tax-paying legal citizens
Boulder--huge sledder community
Fort Collins--very conservitive and soon to open more motorized riding areas

or Aurora.

IMO!

I had know idea that I was dealing with such a superior intellect.
You cut me to the quick with your last statement and I have no option but to bow to your obvious wealth of knowledge and debating prowess.:beer;

Imagine how foolish I feel trying to support my position by stating documented facts. :(
