Best old cheap mtn sled for loaning to buddies?

I agree with the 05 M7 and the 06 or newer 600 RMK. Don't buy the Edge chassis in Polaris - great stable machine but it is a bitch to turn in the powder. You would be better off with an older Gen II chassis. If you want a 700 from Polaris it needs to be 07 or newer. The 06 was phenomenally heavy.
I had great luck re-tracking the Trail RMK's which have 550 fan cooled engines. Great reliable motor, powerband is nice and smooth so newbies don't get stuck as easily and you can pick them up for next to nothing.

Never rode the Yammy so can't comment on it -

FWIW - my current loaner sleds are an 07 700 RMK and 08 700 RMK with updated front ends and e-start. I had set them up for my wife and daughter but they have been such great machines I couldn't part with them when the daughter went off to college and the wife got a new one.

I had an 03 Skidoo Summit 700 which simply would not quit; it was a bomber reliable sled, and with a longer track under it (156), it was really pretty capable.

Sold it with 5500 miles on it, still runs great.

An option; not sure it is better than the same generation RMK, but it is certainly very good.

I also had a 99 670x - a bit more finicky than the 700, and the ZX chassis is (IMHO) BUNCHES better than the S. At the time, the 99 was cheap (<$1500), the ZX was still expensive (~$4k) - now, they're about the same.

Lots of options out there, but the Doo 700 engine seems to be stone reliable. Local shop had one in recently with almost 10k on the clock, still going strong.

I bought a 1997 Yamaha 700 triple with 1500 km on it for $2200.00 the thing is amazing. I end up riding it two or three time a year my self when my sled is waiting for parts.

RMK

I just sold my 2002 Polaris RMK 800. That thing was great and very reliable for me. Sold it for just under $2000

I'll vote the Mtn Max too.... easy to find a 700 w/ 151" in that range, or if the terrain is suitable, a 136" 600 can be had for $1200-$1500

I vote for the 700 Mountain Max also. Had one for years and it is still running around here.

I ride with a guy the has 7000 miles on his and still going. He finally opened the motor and it had a cracked piston skirt. Replace that piston and it's good to go again.

another vote for MM700.
There still a tank when there stuck though.Have a friend with one for the exact same reason ,has over 10k on motor.and that was 2 yrs ago

I vote for MM or viper mountain... My viper had almost 12k miles on it and had to replace a piston and still going today with around 20k on it

I'm with most, go with an Edge RMK 700 or an M7. Both have solid power, "newer" technology and most importantly reliable motors. Good luck!

Have to go with the Yammi MM. I have 3 of them that I keep for friends, family, etc. they are a 1999 and two 2002. The 2002's are 151's with pipes, porting, long track kits, etc, etc, etc. they both have around 4500 miles and are the most reliable, best running sleds that I have ever owned. That goes for the 1999 as well. They probably are valued at about 2k for the 2002's and less than that for the '99. Currently riding a ProRMK, but those Yammi's will be with us as long as we ride. Damn near bullet proof.

I'll give another vote for the Mtn. Max. Hands down one of the best motors ever. There are guys on TY with 15k plus miles on them without opening the motor! My viper has 9k and it still purs like a kitten. With triple pipes & porting, you can be in the 150+ hp range.

My choice was an 04 1m 144" 600 mountain cat. Pretty much a bullet proof motor. 1st. start up this year at 20 below zero 4 pulls on the rope and she was running. This has been a very reliable back up sled. 4th season.
Rookies like to sit down until they ride enough to get hooked.
an M7 would also be an excellent choice IMHO.
