Best hiking trails?

I am getting into being out and about and I am looking for input on the best trails to hike in Utah. I love waterfalls and advanced hikes. But I am also looking for fun hikes that are kid friendly so on the days I have my boys I can take them with me. Anyone?

Down in southern utah near goblin valley there is a loop trail that is a slotted canyon. I can't remember the name of it, it actually has 2 trail names because it is a loop and one side is called one thing and the other is called something else but they connect and you can do the whole loop and end up where you started. It's probably not real safe right now because of all the water and in places you have only a few feet to walk thru and the walls are probably 70 feet high on both sides, but it is REALLY cool to see.

In Ogden at the top of 29th street is the trail head for waterfall canyon that is a fairly short hike but is uphill the whole way. It leads you to a pretty big waterfall and right now with all the water it would be really good to see. The trail is well marked. I've been telling myself I need to get up there soon to see it since usually I'm up there in the middle of the dry spell.

Little Wild Horse?

Mjunkie - do you mean Little Wild Horse Canyon by Goblin Valley? I think that is what you might be referring too - GREAT slot canyon hike for big and little kids.

Try the hike into Secret Lake up Little Cottonwood (thanks phatty for the correction) - our kids love that hike. Lots of options up that way, weekdays are less crowded.

One of my favorite hikes with the kids is not anywhere close to home. It's up around Spirit Lake (North Slope). Hiking back into Tamarack Lake (2 miles) and some of those other lakes is a lot fun and beautiful. Might still be too snowy up that high yet this year.

Yeah!! Thats what it's called, awesome hike!!

Closer to home is Mueller Park Canyon... Hike it over the top and come down North Canyon. You could back pack to Rudy's Flat and stay the night with your boys. There are some great places to put up a tent and the views are pretty cool also. You could also mountain bike it.
I think both trails are closed right now because of the pipe line construction. Great hike or ride in the fall though.
You could also hike into the Church on the back side of Banner, it could be a day hike, or you could make it an over nighter.

Timp in my opinion is the most beautiful hike in northern Utah....its around 8 miles one way and crowded most weekends not terribly kid friendly, only for kids who can manage hiking all day long....either way everyone should do it at least once in life. Plenty of waterfalls along the Wasatch front, the best waterfall kid friendly hike in the state is calf creek south of Boulder Utah (crowded on weekends), don't chicken out at the 2 miles one way its flat, easy and mostly shaded but most of all well worth it. Best taste of the high unitahs for kids would be mt baldy, 1.5 miles one way straight up, best views that close to your car, every family/kid should do this hike.....thats all the secrets I am giving away today...:face-icon-small-hap

Agreed on all. Timp is a must do but not kid friendly. Calf creek is an absolute must. I used to take my scouts to Little Wildhorse Canyon yearly. I think it is the best slot canyon that almost any age can do. I have also taken some clients. I don't recommend the whole loop honestly as the best part is little wildhorse. Plenty of good stuff up Mill, Big and Little in the SL area. If you are brave and fit do Lone Peak but def not with the kids.

Agreed, doesn't get better then Timp. Also the Sundance/Aspen grove area has alot of shorter kid friendly loops. typically under 2 miles round trip..

Took a little hike up top of Sundance yesterday with the Fam....

We don't get out much but I know my wife would highly recommend hiking Upper Bell Falls in the Snow.:face-icon-small-win
She loved that hike.

ahahaha thats funny Ron!

For a kid friendly waterfall hike try Adams Canyon near kaysville.

Timp is a beautiful hike, best done in the Fall IMO. Course all the hikes are better in the fall.

I saw some one suggested Cecret Lake, its up Little cottonwood canyon on Alta Ski resort, not BCC as was suggested.

Calf Creek Falls is awesome and a easly stroll. Its mostly sand the whole 3 miles in.

Everyone should do the living room and ensign peak.

Mineral Fork up BCC has a nice waterfall about 1 mile up. Lake Blanche is pretty kid friendly, little steep in spots. But probably one of the prettiest spots in the cottonwoods. Also there is Lake Desolation, Dog lake off of Mill D in BCC. From brighton there is the hike to Lake Mary, Martha, Catherin. Still under snow right now though... Dont forget Silver lake stroll while you are there.

In LCC white pine lake and red pine lake are pretty easy beautiful trails. Bells canyon is a cake, but dont let your kids (or wife in Rons case) play around the falls. If you are ambious you can go from Alta's Albion lift over the pass down to brighton. Its about 4 miles and really pretty when the flowers come out next month.

Logan canyon has some awesome trails. Wind caves, great wall, and of course tony grove lake and white pine lake are incredible.

Stewart falls is a popular hike in provo canyon, and there is always Emerald lake up on timp. While you are at it, try timpanogus cave. From silver lake up tibble fork there are some great trails to box elder peak and into the lone peak wilderness. This time of year the front side of timp has gorgeous meadows and running waterfalls from snow melt. It also has some trails that rarely see ANY traffic other than wildlife. also in utah county is mona lake rope swing. kind of fun for the kids. Hobble creek has some pretty hikes, but it gets hot and sometimes there isnt much water.

The unintas is its own beast with millions of trails. the 10 miles of henrys fork before kings peak is beautiful, flat, and really easy. The notch trail is pretty and good for kids. Also take a look at shingle creek. all fairly easy trails for kids. If you want more challenging try lofty peak/lake or the Mtn across the highway thats wilderness whos name is escaping me at the moment but starts with an A. haha Adam posted a bunch of goat pictures from there last year.

Frary peak on antelope island is an easy hike with cool views of the city, just bring bug spray or go late in the year when the bugs have died.

I wont recommend Lone peak, Mt Nebo, or mt olympus as those require a lot of elevation gain and work

Mt Granduer in millcreek canyon is a fun loop. and thats about the only one i know up mill creek.

hope that helps get you started!

One of my Goals in life is to publish a Wasatch hiking book that shows PHOTOS instead of text descriptions. So that a hiker can purchase and see EXACTLY what the trail is, and identifiers along the way. :camera::face-icon-small-ton

Loving the input thanks guys. I have been hiking the trails in Centerville but with a 4 and 5 year old some are a little too much right now.

Here are some from Duel Creek South I did it yesterday.

Were you able to take flight on the rope swing before the vicious Rat Dog took you out?:face-icon-small-sho

LOL! I got scared for a sec. Of everything I got left with I got the Rat cause Jamie couldn't have it at her place. I felt bad for the little guy 3 mile hike about killed him. Got home he went and laid in his kennel and slept the rest of the day. If you know of anyone that wants a Quite (not kidding never barks) little dog they can have him. I took my brothers dog the other day wolf/malamute wow that dog about ran me ragged.

Lake Blanche, Big Cottonwood Canyon

You should get into Geocacheing. Your kids would dig it!!!

Silver Lake above Silver Lake reservoir in American Fork Canyon is a good one. Not terribly long, and the fishing at the lake is good. I've also seen moose and bear up there.

Pittsburgh Lake in Mineral Basin is also good.

A bunch of us hiked Waterfall Canyon in Ogden last night. It's only about a 3 mile round trip, once you get over the foot bridge and headed up the canyon is a great work out. There were a bunch of smaller kids there so your little guys might be able to do this one.
