Best Helmet for Mountain Riding

Hey guys, I'm soon going to buy a new helmet. I have a Skidoo Modular Helmet, I like it a lot, but for powder riding it sucks. I'm going to buy a Snowcross style Helmet, Just not sure what I should buy, and was wondering what you guys are using?

well since you use to wear a modular im sure a pink hjc should work fine for ya.... jk... go with the one thats fits good and is light my self i like the thor hjc and the fox hemets the best.

All the Helmets are good, but each fits different so pick one that fits you best and is in your price range. The type of goggle you get is very important. It must be double lens with antifog, as far as brands go just get one that fits your helmut and face well. Do not cheap out on the goggles or you will have a foggy mess.
Remember with anti-fog lens you can not clean the inside with anything other than the silk cloth or it will smear. I take my lens out wash it with warm soapy water and let dry, reinstall and polish with the cleaning rag and you are good to go.

Already Decided on the Sinister 509 goggles. Unfortunately, unless I go with a DOO helmet, I won't be able to try on the helmet to test the fit, I live in a very rural Newfoundland town.

But thanks for the replies guys

I agree, dont cheap out on a helmet, get the most comfortable one that you can afford! I swapped my Fox helmet out this year and upgraded to a Troy Lee helmet, worth every penny! Good luck:beer;

I picked up a HJC AC-X3 carbon fibre lid in the fall and its awesome.

Ventilation it top notch but the padding is a bit stiff still (I've got about 700 miles in this helmet so far).

Goggles and breath deflector fit and seal perfectly (scott Xi goggles and hjc deflector)

Not sure which is the best.... but it's NOT a SkiDoo snowcross helmet... the biggest sweat bucket I've owned!

Just picked up a ARAI VX PRO 3, can't wait to try it!!

those are awesome helmets, the only reason i didn't ge tone this time around was availability. i went with the thor carbon fibre. awesome helmet as well, and very light. without trying some different ones on, it's a tough call. my group pretty much all have the same size heads, yet we all have diff helmets. the other guys lids just don't fit me right. it's all about feel, and weight. like others have said, don't cheap out!

I use a Bell Moto 8, went from a fox to this helmet for moto and it felt way to close in the face. However it is way safe has less swing weight and now if I try on a fox or similar the front face piece seems way to far out. The moto 8 is light, not the lightest, but very technical and feels awesome. You can find them at a good price on line....like anything else.

I've tried most brands and my opinion for best bang for your buck is the HJC AC-X3 and the Thor SVR. I love my Troylee but a little pricey. Shoei vfx-r is a great warm weather helmet, also pricey. Try stay away from the M2R they are not famous for protecting your head well. My ONE Industries is quite heavy. Try e-bay. You often can get a nice helmet for a nice price.
Helmet sizing charts can easily be found by a quick search on the internet.

I just got an AC-X3 HJC before this season and so far I like it. I wished that I could open and close the vents, but it seems to be plenty warm the way it is. It is lightweight, which is a must. Here is a sizing chart for HJC, I looked at it and got one for half price brand new on ebay.

thor svr for the money is the best i have found and the fit is good. BTW put the quick straps on the gogles and stick the other strap in you pack for when you break your quick straps on the hill. scott makes a no fog cloth wipe that works good if you do it in the house before you leave.

Really like my Troy lee designs helmet. It was however to vented, I had to tape up some of the vents to keep my head from freezing. I also have a KBC that I just bought this year. I love everything about it EXCEPT my goggles wont fit in the opening. That makes it kind of a pain. Also the KBC runs a bit small, so order the next size or you will not be happy.

i tried bell and biefe, then in a pinch before a ride weekend i got a thh off ebay, been the best fitting helmet i have had, goggles fit and warm, had a heck of time getting my quick strap to stick too it

I started wearing a ski helmet because it is light and as a back country rider...not really a DOT deal. More like skiing. You can find em with vents that open and close and chin guard if you think you need it. We rode for a gazillion years with open face helmets and drop down shields. I like it. Goose
