Best early season riding near tahoe

I have a buddy that lives on the north shore, but has done most his sledding up here in oregon with me, where's are best bet for early season riding near tahoe? 1-2 hour drive okay. where gets the best coverage first or does it vary year to year?

It all depends when the "white" starts flying. If he's at Northshore, you can hit Blackwood Canyon(5 miles from Tahoe City), LTS(Little Truckee Summit) 17 miles East of Truckee on HWY 89, or Brockway Summit(5 miles up HWY 267from Kings Beach). There are other spots also. Early season riding down here is usually road/trail riding till the meadows and bowls fill in, unless we get a big dumper right out of the hole. Early season sled carnage is normal. To many guys can't wait and go find rocks, tree stumps and whatever else might be lurking below the surface. A-arm and trailing arm sales are usually good early in the season.

Check back on here and look for early reports, as guys will post ride info/results. Hope this helps.

The blackwoods area is on my to ride list, we were on the rubicon trail in the summer in our crawler and I couldn't stop thinking how good the riding would be in that area.

What kind of base is needed for good boondocking there?

Blackwood Canyon

3-5 ft. base would be ideal(and safe). Lots of stumps and big pebbles in that area. When it's set-up, the riding is great. Climbing, trees, meadows, lakes plus lot's of great views. The only thing that sucks is the road in -- usually 3-5 miles of whoops. And you want to stay away from there on the weekends. It's a Calif. Sno-Park and parking is limited, as the lot is small. You can also park down by the main road that goes around the westshore. Weekends attract all the X-country skiers. During the week, get there before 9-9:30 and you're good to go.

Thanks. I had assumed that the place is a zoo on the weekends, the ski areas aren't worth skiing at on the weekends they are so crowded, best to just use the weekends there to sleep off a hangover.

Wheres best to ride on the weekends? We won't mind driving for elbow room.

Thanks again

Probably LTS, if you get there by 8:30. Big area and everyone pretty much scatters all around once they leave the parking lot. Also, stay away from Hope Valley on the weekends. It's a big CF, plus all the Gestapo fellers are there to write you up for anything they can. The Gold Lake/Bassetts and Yuba Pass areas are a couple of other decent spots for weekend riding. About 1-1 1/2 hrs. away from Tahoe Northshore. Yuba is a Sno-park, so it will be full early on.

If your talking first storm stuff, I really like Yuba pass. It's got decent road riding cause they don't have many rocks under a few inches of snow and the land mines are pretty easy to see on the few ventures off the beaten path.

After a few storms is opens up pretty good just about anywhere.

Good luck

:smow: Tony points out a great area, I have ridden there as early as mid Oct in the past and the roads are good for early and late season. :smow:
