Best diesel for 1995-1998

One thing that keeps coming up is Dodges week lift pumps? If you buy a 94-early 98 you have a 12v p-pump. No lift pump on that motor... Bang for the buck for towing will always be a cummins, now if we were talking interior space that would be a whole new game.

Really? Educate me here... Whats this then? I'm not a Cummins guy and dont know to much about them. I would like to know for my own info.

That is the mechanical pump used on the 94-98 cummins, and tractors, and trackhoes, and backhoes, and lots of other industrial equipment. Just about bullet proof. The 99-2002 used electric pumps designed by Carter Corp. THEY were the lift pump problem. Easy fix these days as FASS came out with a Direct Dodge Replacement Pump or DDRP and is a simple bolt on hour swap for those not wanting to spend much for relatively stock engines. Four year guarantee and only $275 or so. The P7100 does'nt need fuel to cool and lube the pump as the critical parts are lubed by engine oil, the VP44 is fuel only.

the only thing it "owned" at was hauling more people. The 12v owned the 7.3.

No question about the motor. I will give you that hands down. I was refering to a truck with a useable backseat and a chassis that would hold together. The 7.3 isn't a bad motor, but has no where near the power or the milage of the 12v.

Hey Ford428, your link you posted is for a "primer" used on 12v p-pump cummins motors. Used when you change fuel filter ect. I hope now with this info and the other helpfull info on this thread from opel you are now "educated". I do have to admit I am a ford guy also. Ive got a 78 f350 super-cab with a 12v nv4500 swap going in it. I think thats why you are starting to see so many "fummins" showing up!!

I build my own stuff as well. I'm always learning stuff and never to be able to know it all. But I'm one step a head of you LOL

I built a 79 (Factory Heavy 3/4) F-250 Super Cab with factory A/C, kept the factory selector switch in the cab (for dual tanks) with 6.9 ATS Turbo with a super stout C-6 I did in the fall of 2007! Loved it!

I have the build posted here:

Beautiful truck 428! Of all the trucks that I have had over the years, I miss my 79 s/c the most. I would still be running it if a kid hadn't run a stop sign and totalled it. Bent the frame bad.

428 That truck is frakkin sick man....that's a really cool build. I'm usually a GM or import guy, but I always loved the 78-79 Fords....would love to have a nice one if I ran out of other stuff to waste money on haha

That is the the "fuel pump". It has a primer on it, but is the actual pump that delivers to th P7100 injector pump from the tank.

I would go with the ford just due to the size of the interior. The 7.3 has proven reliability and will have plenty of power to handle your towing needs. The 96-98 dodge with the cummins had the 215 p7100 injection pump which with very minimal expense could be turned up to get big power gains. My ideal set up would be a crew cab ford with a 12v cummins and a 6 speed.

i currently run a 1st gen 12v/nv-4500 5sp but rounded up all the stuff to swap in a 215 p-pump an nv 5600 6spd/ twins etc. my current set-up has worked well though.- over 800 ftlbs at rears at 1900 rpm.
