Best boots for snow bike

I just picked up Forma Terras. Waterproof, aggressive sole, enough sport for MX, and Forma has an insulated liner for them. But I've been wearing tech 3's the last couple years, never any issues. Wear good wool socks and pack extra just in case. Boots should fit snug, an extra airspace will make your feet cold.

In the back of my mind I always wonder about the what if's though.

What if I end up having to spend an overnight up here in this harsh climate, are my feet gonna survive an overnighter?

Somehow I have a hard time believing motocross boots are gonna satisfy that requirement?

Just keep in mind that if you ever have to walk out....you won't make it very far in stiff motocross boots.

most high end mx boots have hinged ankles, and allow easy walking. several mx/adventure boots are gore-tex lined, and or waterproof. are they warm, depends on activity level. heated insoles will help too.

using your above scenario, you wont make it very far in stiff snowboard boots. the whole idea is to get a compromise, enough protection to avoid injury to your feet, or ankles, and enough dryness, warmth to get you through the day.

on the protection thing... you take a bad footpeg landing with a front toe tip, in sled boots, prepare to taco your foot, and spend the next several months rehabbing it. same with ankle twists ect... buy as much protection as you can afford. Ski

Just to preface this, it is my uneducated opinion: the adventure dual sport boots that I looked at (formas, bilt, MSR, a couple of other) were less protection than a higher end snowmobile boot. The adventure vs a klim adrenaline looks to be less protection there are a couple of round inserts around the ankle, toe, heal and that seems to be it for protection. There are multiple spots on the boot like the outside side of the foot where you can feel the slightest touch, you know the side that is most likely to brush up against stuff. I don't know maybe I am missing something? I will give the boot is a couple of inches taller, but does that equals more protection? Now when you step up to the full MX boot, yes there you have the protection but they are not the same as DS boot. With a good snowmobile boot at least I have the padding the metal inserts and there are no apparent weak spots, and they are stiff.

Almost a must for mx style boots, pegs, bars, logs, damn moving trees that jump out in front of you!
Gortex socks and battery thermal insoles for the 0 degree days.
Besides doesn’t eveyone carry a couple small handwarmers in their pack in case you need them for emergencies.:face-icon-small-hap

I find it hard to believe any motocross boot is worth it's value in cold conditions . A steel shank alone would eventually get the better of you .
As far as walking around in descent snow conditions try walking along side a guy with wide sled boots on , your better of crawling trying to keep up while he's plowing a trail away from you .
Heated insoles help but that's not the answer . I tried so hard to make my Sidi Rain boots work , they are as comfortable as a good pair of shoes but when the cold makes it's way threw the bottom the pain eventually gets unbearable , it gets so bad that the knees start aching .

I don't know the answer , just purchased a pair of last years TOBE contego speed and we'll see .
The FXR Elevations boa that I used last season worked fairly good but as far as keeping dry that's another story . But they sure looked good in the parking lot .

Seems the simple solution for those worried about requiring amputated feet after a snow sleepover would be to carry some chemical warming packs and to shove them in the boots, and hands, and all over ones body.

Funny how something so simple can make a difference .
I walked out one time , it was only a couple of miles as the crow flies and I took that route just to shave off a mile or so and at one time I thought if I just dug in and take a little nap I'd be refreshed . It was cold and windy and late at night , funny how a person can be exhausted from heat and at the same time not be able to take off a thick head sock because it was to cold . I cursed my helmet the whole way thinking that if I really needed to take a rest I'd be able to use it for warmth , amazing how cumbersome a helmet can be when the footing is unstable . Made it to the cabin got a second wind from being mad at myself and freighted the dead horse back .
You just never know and in most situations it's how you handle it that makes a difference .

That being said , they just found a guy that went missing on his sled the other day in the interior frozen . It's not uncommon and I'm not gonna judge how it happened but it does .

I need to up my boot game. I've been wearing Danners for years both sledding and biking. They are dry, light and always warm but they don't offer a lot of protection. I tagged a log last season, no damage but it hurt and got me to thinking. What about a heavy duty winter work boot with CF toe cap and sole plate with a Vibram sole. I haven't looked yet but their must be something out there. I have shin pads for this season finally and I wear a full tech vest now after getting speared by a gray ghost tree.

A lot of talk about the what-ifs and having to walk out being difficult in MX boots. Walking out is going to be difficult in any boot. Set yourself up for success on every ride. You need to be mentally and physically fit if you want to be prepared for the what-ifs. Also, a good set of snow shoes makes that hike out a little easier.

everyone can knock on MX boots for being uncomfortable to walk in, but last year i would have broke my foot/ankle/shin for sure from a tree I smoked... I felt the boots protection work against ripping my foot off. If you plan on walking out and not wanting to freeze to death I'd suggest buying an InReach, then you're protected all around. I would never recommend anything but MX protection!

If they are hinged I think they are comfortable... For myself I need warmth... But right now we need it to snow so all of it is irelevent

I have worn the TOBE Contego boots for the last 2 winters. Excellent boot with outstanding shin protection. Best overall support I have found. They measure 13.5 inches tall. If they were 16" as are my moto boots they would be perfect. I wear their Mono suit as well. Can't beat their quality.

No.no.no. I destroyed my tobe one piece in about 5 minutes of snowbiking.the only part I didn’t destroy was under my *** snd it was wet as diarrhea. Might have been waterproof if it was your first season on it. Worked ok on a sled but for me ❄️bike fail!!

I have the new Tobe, Klim Boa adrenaline and HMK carbon and double Boa.and the Motorfist Alpha 2018 looks like it was purpose built for snowbikes, Double boa and has great shifter feel .completely redesigned from 2017. Sled boot are too bulky in the toe. HMK is working on a very nice Snowbike specific boot for next season so stay tuned .
