Best advice your dad ever gave you?

I don't recall any good advice my dad has ever given me.

But he has always led us by example, and I think all four of his boys turned out alright.

Like after the first time I ever got drunk in high school, he never said a word. But I was out on the old 1947 John Deere about two hours earlier than I would have been...:beer;

The saying "don't pi$$ on my back and tell me it's raining" My Dad Rocks a very intelligent man that has always wanted the best for me, my parents always included both me and my brother so that we could be a family. I was raised well by my parents and will always be grateful.

"if you wanna get it done, get it right the first time.."
both from my dad and my grandpa...
And something my grandpa and my dad both have taught me..
"It's not the length of life, but the depth of life."

no real quotes but,

don't be an acehat

if someone deserves respect give it

if someone needs to be hit don't talk just hit hard and fast

my favorite as a kid, "if I get called into school for you fighting I don't care the reason but you damn well better have won"

And probably the 2 best lines he ever gave me

I love you and am proud of you

and the day he found out I was going to marry my wife(who had our first daughter before we met, she was 2 at the time). We were driving in the car and he looked over and said, "Robb little girls need daddy's". He didn't say anything else but that was enough.

One that sticks with me is the following that my old man got from his old man:

"An education is hell of a lot easier to pack on your shoulders than a knapsack."

I'm currently in my second year of H.E.T., making a good buck and getting an education to boot. As a matter of fact, I just registered to go to school again today:). And some people my age (20) are still working minimum wage jobs, going no where in life and then b!tch about being broke and such... I don't get it:confused:.

I had a good relationship with my Dad. He died unexpectedly at too young an age 48. I have tried to be half the man he was and that is saying a lot. I miss him even today and wonder how much better a person I would be if he was still around. Some of his sayings:

Be careful of your thoughts; they may become words at any moment.
(Spoken to me when I was trying to lie or get out of trouble).

The best way out of a problem is through it.
(When ever I was having a tough time trying to resolve any type of problem).

There is no failure except in no longer trying. and The only things you regret are the things you don't do.

And my favorite:
Learn from the mistakes of others--you can never live long enough to make them all yourself.

'Keep your head down, knee's bent, left arm straight and hit it hard'
After I'd bought a brand new '78 Trans-Am, I gave him a ride in it and all he had to say was 'Don't out drive the headlights'
We lost him 2 years ago during surgery to improve the circulation to his feet so he could play even MORE golf. I never got to say good bye. Damn I miss him!

My Dad is an Arab immigrant (he's a Christian, so don't get your panties all wadded up).

Came to this country when he was 38 years old with literally the clothes on his back. Had never been here before. Worked 2 warehouse jobs, put himself through college on his dime, and eventually retired a few years back from the position of assistant director at a local hospital. As you can imagine, most of the speeches I heard while growing up were on the value of hard work, not taking anything for granted, and pulling one's self up by one's own bootstraps. But my all time favorite saying of his is:

"I never mind helping someone out who needs some help. I do very much mind being taken advantage of."

Almost forgot, another one of his that I like, "Nothing is more important than your family."

Wow, I'm surprised how many people had bad dads. I hope I'm not one of them when the time comes.

My dad is a great guy with great intentions. He wasn't a good husband but was always a good father. My favorite line from him:
"Date a fat chick, nobody wants them and you won't have any problems". Or...
"Don't get married" - wish I would have followed through on that one.

I have a great step-dad too. He has good financial advice.

"If you don't have the money now, you won't have it later" (referring to credit cards).

Favorites from my Dad.
There are easier ways to make money than farming...

If you don't have time to do it right when will you have time to do it again.

Use this for more than a hat rack (When striking my head with his index finger)

Love your kids... life is too short.

It wasn't always easy around my house but I do love my dad and try to teach my kids the things that he taught me.

"Don't put you hands were you won't put your face." Snowblowers

"Measure twice cut once". After i wasted a $40 piece of wood.

Step dad is a good man. Dad is worthless but a nice guy and good friend

"Don't go on Snowest, once your on you can never leave"

Shows how much he know's!!! right

Wait a min:eek:
