best 1/2 ton engine option for single sled hauler

I've been looking at tunes for the ford ecoboost motors (both 2.7L and 3.5L) - torque and horsepower seems way better than most v8s or even the smaller diesels. If I am never towing and wanted the most power at elevation, this seems like the best option. Anything I am missing here?

I can't speak for elevation but the 3.5L Eco is a beast, I can't say enough good things about it pulling 3 sleds. 83403380_2866762643354384_1734091061485109248_n.jpg

Best option is to not buy a half ton buy a crew long diesel preferably with a duramax or cummins and don’t look back the long wheel base will ride the best and u will have plenty of room and the long box get u the most fuel capacity and plenty of room for added fuel capacity. And the truck will hold its value better

You'll be really happy with the 3.5 eco with out a tune.

Most I pull with mine is a 2 place sled trailer and I can't tell it's back there.

3.5 EB is a great motor. Only other 1/2T motor I would have is the 6.2 chevy. The problem with the Chev is you can only get it in full load trucks so not budget friendly if that's a consideration. And if budget isn't a consideration then Matthew runge is correct above other than the fact he leaves out the F350 which is arguably the best 1T diesel right now.

Starting in 2020 you could get the 6.2 in most trim levels From Custom all the way up to High Country. At elevation the 3.5 Eco will still blow it away. Especially with a tune...
And he said he will never be towing so why are people suggesting he gets a 1 ton?

Sorry I did not mean to offend anyone I just left out the f 350 because I was trying to stay apples to apples on budget as not every one can afford a 60 -80k truck so I just through a nice use cummins or duramax could be close to the price of half ton eco boost. You are right the new fords are beasts but I would still stay away from any Ford F-350 before 2015 because of so my turbo problems of the early 6.7 power strokes and lets face it the 6.0 and 6.4s have a bad reputation. Did u know the newer 6.7 power stroke has a lot of similarities to a lml duramax both have cp4 injection pumps and Both use vgt turbos and piezo injectors.

Thank you all for the feedback, glad the point on the 6.2 vs 3.5 EB came up. Sounds like the 3.5 EB is still gonna be better at elevation with towing a trailer not at all a factor. Anyone have recommendations on best value and reliability for year/trim for a ford 3.5EB? Have always been a chevy guy so a bit out of touch with the different models. And yes, if $$ was no object, would love a new 1ton diesel!!

I also vote the 10 speed 3.5.

The turbo's are just too good at elevation....not even GM could throw enough CC's at a motor to take the place of them, and that's typically GM's answer to everything. Throw more cubes at it.

on my 2nd 3.5 EB and no complaints, 10 speed is a bit better on gas but i wouldnt hesitate to buy the 6 speed either. Went from a limited to a XLT if your wondering about options...

Get a 2.7 eco with a 10 speed. Its a beast as well. I've driven both 3.5 and 2.7s. There is no need for you to get anything more powerful than a 2.7 for single sled hauler. The 2.7 gets incredible hwy mpg as well when not towing. The used 2.7 with a 6 speed is a good option too. My dad has that.(2015) The other guys are right about the ecoboost engines being better at elevation. Even a 2.7 ecoboost vs a GM 6.2 has more power at elevation. I'm not saying its better, just stating facts.

I have a 19 f150 XLT sport 4x4 2.7 10 speed. 36 gallon tank, and a Rear electronic locker. ( all factory options) I just bought a 7.5x20x5ft V Neo NASX enclosed trailer. Have only towed it home from the dealer about 100 miles, but it pulled it great up steep hills @ 75mph no problem. Good luck in your decision.

The EB's can't be beat for towing with a half ton. That said, if you don't tow much .... when all the trucks are unloaded, I still find V8 trucks more fun to drive. Much quicker throttle response, more engine braking, sounds better, feels quicker even if it isn't.

This pretty much nails it.
Honestly, I would recommend getting the brand you want, from a dealer that will provide good service. For what you want to do, any of the modern trucks will shine.

have they changed how you can spec the trucks? Used to be couldn't get the 2.7 with the Supercrew and 6.5' box which is a deal breaker for me, the 5.5' box won't work.
