benifits and downfalls of track porting

I have never seen any benefits from porting. I have not seen them tear easier, but spinning at 80 mph, I want all the rubber I can get between the rails and the outside world.:)

The one added feature I like is when I'm stuck and jack the back of my sled up, I can fire it up and spin the track and get all of the snow out of the skid :) Other then that I've seen no gain. Eric

On my old MM it seemed as my skid dint have the build up like without them, in deep snow.. A ported track sucks on water.

The benefit is less rotating mass -- remember 1 pound of rotating mass= 7 pounds of stationary mass as far as performance gain goes.

Sheds snow out of the suspension = You carry less weight around in the skid

It makes the track more flexible = less rolling resistance

( a friend has 5 holes across on his cmx like a wet noodle)

I only do two in the middle call me conservative

The best is------All this is free

But they do suck on water.

I have run ported tracks of and on for 4 years now with 0 failure even on turbo sleds , so I would not worry about durability - with the 2 holes anyway But than he has not killed his 5 holer on the cmx in 3 years either.

i have ordered a challenger extreme track, if i decide to port it, where do the holes go and what size should the holes be. would it be easy to do . i see one can buy a porting tool. thanks

I am also interested in porting my track. I just bought a new 2010 MTX and haven't had a chance to run it yet. But I can't see how it could hurt, less rotating mass has to be a good thing. Plus getting rid of excess snow out of the skid can't hurt either. If anyone knows a good pattern to go with please share.
