Belts

Hey all, just a rookie sledder, and gettin my 05 900 RMK into shape. Fully stock except I put my SLP can and Belt cover on once i bought it. I have 800 Miles on it now. As far as I am aware, everything else is fully stock.

MY QUESTIONS:
1. my coolant level was almost non existant, so i refilled it...weird?
2. My oil was low (dangerously) and i refilled with new polaris synthetic
3. Im pretty sure that my belt was original, (polaris) and i Bought 2 new Dayco high torque belts. Are they any good? how do I tell when a belt is done, besides blowing it?

4. I am a tall guy, I'm 6'2. I want to raise my bars up a bit, but I know that you can only raise them so high without cable extenders. How much of a rise can i get away with without tinkering with cables?

Welcome to the site. If your new to the 900 then I would recommend you take some time and read through the stickies posted at the top of this section, there is literally weeks worth of PRICELESS information on great ways to set up these sleds to make them last thousands of miles trouble-free.

1. Keep an eye on your coolant level, it once it burps out what it wants to when it's warm, it should settle to a cold level just below the cold fill line. Just keep an eye on your engine temp guage to stay informed about any tempurature spikes or elevated readings... don't let the sled go over 175 without packing snow on the boards for immediate cooling in hard-pack conditions... these motors are happiest @ 126*F and engine damage will occur shortly above 200*F Don't let it get that hot.

2. These sleds LOVE oil... I always use Polaris synthetic, but you will never get anyone to agree on what brand or grade to go with, just make sure it is topped off and you are using plenty of it.

3. DO NOT ALLOW A BELT TO BLOW ON THIS SLED!!!!! Especially on the 05's due to the weaker crankshaft stub, a blown belt can be the kiss of death for the crank... ALWAYS inspect the belt before every ride for signs of heat-cracking, pieces of cord pulling out, etc... Many of the 900 guys here prefer to run the Polaris belt # 3211115, it is simply the strongest belt on the face of the earth and was designed specifically for the 900s as they have a reputation as belt-eaters.

4. On most sleds you will only have enough length in your cables and brake line to extend 3" before you run into problems... I would suggest re-routing your wiring GENTLY and measuring how much slack you have to see if you can go any taller... The wiring on these machines is rather fragile, just be careful not to tug or bend any of the wiring too much or you could cause yourself some headaches.. it has been known on occasion to break inside the rubber insulation.

05 oil tank is deceiving too. The majority of the tank is hidden underneath. If you shine a flashlight in there you will see the tank is actually much bigger than it looks at first. There is also a low oil warning indicator, although I have never actually seen it come on.
 
4 inch handlebar riser can be done but you will have to reroute your wires around the engine. You may need to remove your exhaust to be able to cut zip ties to move the wires. Make sure you wrap all the wire looms with heat tape after moving them so they do not melt from the exhaust pipe heat.
