Drewd Can someone point a newbie to belt deflection? Never did it once on my last sled, a 99 RMK 700, and never messed with deflection on any of my ATVs I've had for years.
Would appreciate a little help and explanation as to what deflection is used for. Thanks!
It,s simple really, you,ve got two v-pulleys and a v-belt, if the belt is too tight in them at rest, as soon as you start the engine the belt will grab and start to move the sled forward. If the belt is too loose, you have to rev the engine up too high to get the primary closed enough to take up the extra slack, causing bog and jerky starting. To get the proper freeplay in the belt, there are a lot of different methods everyone uses, track stand and creep as mentioned, pushing down and measuring is usually in the manuals, belt height in the secondary. Different sleds and years also have different methods of adjusting the freeplay, you have to figure that out first, principle is the same in all of them though, you,re just opening or closing the secondary.I,ve always tightened the belt and felt to see if i can move the belt slightly up and down in the primary. Put your fingers down into the primary above and below the belt and push in, then feel if theres any play, too much tighten some more, none or very little, loosen the secondary. I like to keep it to very little play, better engagement and easier on the belt, no flopping up and down.
