Belt to sheave clearance. Which is worse?

Have what seems to be too much belt/sheave clearance on my spare clutch. Is it worse to have too much or too little? Would too little cause the grooves worse than too much? Won't have access to spider nut tool before next trip to fix it.

I think most times when the clearance is off, it is too much. It would be worse to have too little. If the clearance isn't way too much, I wouldn't worry for the upcoming ride. It will work best though when properly adjusted.

I'm getting .075 clearance. Spec is .005-.035 so will have to get it shimmed. Will have to wait til after the trip though. It is a back-up clutch so it can be off for now.

I was just curious if the grooving in the faces of the clutch are caused by too much clearance so when the clutch engages it slams more -OR- If they're caused by not enough clearance and the constant slight rubbing from the belt.
Maybe it's just the harder 1115 belt and it'll groove no matter what?

Yes, .075 is too much. I wouldn't use it that way. A good clearance would be .020 using a new belt to measure. You would have a harsh engagement when clearanced that wide. This would cause some grooving on the sheaves. The 115 is a hard compound, and will cause grooving over time. The obvious way to slow this grooving is to prevent belt slippage. Some people are using aftermarket weights, and different springs, to put more side pressure on the belt.

If you scrub your belts, keep the clutches clean, and aligned properly, it will all help.

Take a look at the 911 Response adjustable clutch face/kit. Read down the page through the tech part. I bought one 2 seasons ago after talking at length to Duane Watt and Indy Dan. I put it on my Boosted Dragon in 08 and it has been great so far. You can adjust belt side clearance with an allen wrench. This thing is stupid simple and it had held up well for over 2 boosted seasons so far. BTW, I had Dan do the install and balance on the clutch and am glad I did. Pull & Go man. EW

Edit....Got the lead from Mountainhorse, gotta give props when due. Thanks MH.

that thing is sick!...is there really any downside to it besides the fact that it costs $200? the fact you can change belt to sheave clearance with an allen wrench is worth the price alone! i mean you can adjust it as the belt wears...how awesome is that...i definitely want one now!

This is how it looks on a P-85 with Hi-Tech's HD clutch cover. Again, I really think the key was a precision install and balance job by Indy Dan. Nothing in the clutch world that I have done on my own has been as bullet proof as the stuff Dan has done for me at Indy Specialties. EW
