belt off set on the new viper

Speaking of belt adjustment. What a PITA on this chassis! First off, no tool to thread in to the secondary clutch to open it up to take off the belt. Second, the belt guard doesn't come off, its riveted in place. In the owners manual it shows rotating the back sheave and pushing toward the bulkhead to open it up. That didn't work well for me. I was able to push on the helix to get it to open up. Going back on was even worse as the spring wanted to keep pushing to halves together. I had to push on the helix and force the belt down into the secondary to keep it from slamming shut.

Gripe: Secondary is still a button secondary clutch. I thought everyone had moved past these to rollers by now!

Yes a big PITA, Cut my knuckles all up you will also need a box of bandaids.
I think I lost a pint of blood all over the dam thing by the time I got the belt back on.
Dam all the covers are sharp! Flipping stupid!

You too eh?
I cut my thumb and finger during the process. I didn't even notice til I went to put my helmet back on and realized I had blood inside my helmet. I was like, how'd that happen! I don't normally carry band-aid's in my backpack, but looks like I'm gonna half to! That PLUS deburr the sharp edges if I can fine em!

I was told by friend that messing with the belt cover is a guarantee for a bleeder. I wanted to make sure i knew how to change the belt now instead of figuring it out in the middle of b.f.e. I took it off and put it back on took a few steps back and realized I darn near cut every one of my fingers off and was bleeding like a gutted deer......Stupid riveted cover

Maybe its progress but I miss the days when I could open the hood remove the belt guard and remove and replace the belt with ease.
Don't get me started on the spark plugs.

I don't know when the factory's are going to realize that having easy access to our clutches is essential to a sleds performance...Factory's need to make belt removal and deflection adjustment quick and simple and not a knuckle bleeding event....I agree with the Team Tied thought.... a simple key way built into the secondary makes adjustment simple quick & easy...Thanks to the aftermarket tools for building a better mouse trap to fix the mouse trap the factory engineers just happen to over look.

$90 is a bit steep for a belt adjuster!

Watching their installation video, it also looks like you loose the "float" action once you tighten the lock collar and apply pressure to open the sheave to adjust deflection.

didnt think it was that bad considering the cost of a new team tied:face-icon-small-hap
it does float once clutch starts to move.

Might help to put some gloves on. Really no need to take gloves off to change belt on the trail. Just sayin:)

I have always loved the fact that tools aren't necessary to change a belt on a yamaha.

That might be true ALL clutches can open without a tool. Except its a good rule of thumb to check your deflection properly each time a belt is installed and that requires a tool.

1. Lock the brake
2. With both hands grab helix and twist and push in (may have to hold in with one hand and push belt down into the secondary)
3. Take off belt
4. put belt back on primary and as far on the secondary as you can
5. With both hands grab helix and twist and push in, belt should fall in if not hold helix in with one hand and push belt on.

Using the above I find the Viper no harder to change than the Nytro.

yup real easy with standard spring i can do it with one hand, but not with the turbo springs i run.:face-icon-small-coo

That's exactly the shape I was thinking about building mine. It will probably be a variation of that style. It works very much like the Doo XP stock one. I like how it uses the same tool as a TEAM clutch.

The TEAM Tied is just a better mouse trap all together IMO.

That deflection tool couldn't take more than 5-10 min to run on a CNC machine. Our shop rate is $60/hr or $1/min. There can't be more than $5 in material there. You do the math :)

It also doesn't include the small fortune of Team Helix's you'll be buying buy before your satisfied :face-icon-small-win

I've been able to get the shift pattern I want within 1-2 helix's. Not sure why you've ended up with a small fortune of Team helix's.

after 16 years of running a ton of boost through my yammi clutches without a failure i have no interest in changing.i get your point about cost but you can make one & i cant,so if i want i pay.:face-icon-small-coo

I'm a huge team fan back in the day when the TRA stunk nuts the Team and there roller design helped big time at minimizing bind since the summit sled did not come with rollers..Doo had a roller setup in there stock MXZ sled steel rollers on steel helix Hmmm why are the clutches so hot BRP ????....Team pioneers multi-angles and reveres angle helix and provided a much smoother cooler & easy to adjust secondary that works very very good as I'm sure you already know...if any of you guys owned a TRA back in the day you may know where I'm coming from. And don't get me wrong I'm still madly in love with the TRA ..As far as helix $fortune$ they are almost double $100.00 compared to the $60.OO OEM helix .

FYI... a little emry cloth/ sand paper, and about five minutes taking the edge off of the belt cover will keep all you guys from staining the snow and bleeding out on the mountain.
All these sleds have had sharp edges for years!

Some people just learn different i guess.

Not sure where you are finding OEM helix's at $60 a pop cause I'm seeing the Viper helix at $142/retail. Sure you can find em for less than retail, but it puts them pretty close to Team's retail cost.....it's about 6's to me. In the end, I know which secondary I'd prefer!

I'm not sure which TRA version you are dogging on. The TRA II has great low end shift but lacked top end shift. The P-85 was basically opposite in the same generation. The TRA III, V, and VII have all been great clutches! Matter of fact, I have 1400 hard miles on my ORIGINAL XP belt (TRA 7)! The 5 came on the 1000 motor and is a forged casting. Its easily the toughest of all of them!

While they may/may-not run hotter than comparable primaries the simple on the hill tunability is awesome!

$142.00 for a Viper Helix ??? Holy Moly it better self wipe the dust that sticks to it. Dalton must have them for $100....Summit SC, through XP clutching were poorly calibrated from the factory..The straight 44 was about the only thing you could rely on to work....You know how turbos can glow orange ? One time I saw the same happen the TRA. LoL

Back in the day also means back in the day price.

Who changes a belt on a Yamaha? 5 turbos and never changed a belt(except for the hell of it one time). And that includes pulling Poos,Doos,Cats, and Yammies out.
