Been in North Dakota for 5 weeks.

When I first got here in Bismarck, first impression was everyone was rude, yet there were beautiful women everywhere so that made up for it. I landed a job the 2nd day, and have been.working since. Bad news, is tuesday i broke a vertebrae. Been off for the last 3 days, and today i called my boss to give him an update. I expressed a concern that this injury may have jeapordized anything as far as employment goes, and he broke the good news to me today that I had gotten a raise as of yesterday. So all in all, things are going great on this journey so far. If any of you are in a current life change, or thinking about doing something totally different, do it. And work harder than anyone else in your crew. Good things will happen. and if you ARE honestly going hard at everything you do, and arent seeing any advancement of any sort, get the hell out of there and so something different. I broke my friggin back and still got a raise. Im nothing special.. get after it.

Next goal, is clean up my credit, and start a few business or services.

BOOM!

You must not be meeting the right people, I love ND, and most people are super nice, but that was mostly eastern ND. I'll be out in Bismark in September for a wedding.

Before you say ND people are rude, think about this. In the last 10 years your state and your way of life has gone thru a major change. Thousands upon thousands of people have come to your state because of a boom and because of that the cost of living and housing has gone up and up and up. Many people have sold their homes that they have lived in for years and left because of the boom and the type of people booms attract. Along with the rise in crime and drugs. I would be rude to outsiders myself. On the other hand maybe the ones that you are running into that are rude are the outsiders and not true locals. In my opinion before the boom ND was populated with the most family oriented and tightly bonded people I have ever seen. That has been my opinion for many decades. I went through there last week and stopped in Beach (the Flying J is a crap hole) and Bismarck for fuel and saw a totally different makeup in population than in years past

well that's just rude.....

haha. yeah, I thought about all that too. and turns out most of the douches are outsiders. but things are looking up! its a small town, and people are remembering me and my brother almost everywhere. ( he's over here too ) . I like it a lot... been making some moves on some sort of business venture so we'll see how that pans out. Bismack is a great place for business from the looks of it.

I was going to say the same thing. It does get old talking to people moving here, where they are from is always better then here, alot of times they have nothing good to say about ND, they just say there's nothing to do here. Then they go on to say that there the best at what they do and brag themselves up. Thats probably 80% of the people who I talk to, while out at the bar ect. Then in the last 3 weeks ive caught 8 trucks mudding through our fields 2 with ND plates rest with out of state plates. Find places where people were shooting guns and just trash everywhere, if they would clean up I wouldn't care, but 90% of the people don't. Find a meth lab in a camper burning in our field, owner is from Oregon of the stolen camper, doesn't want anything to do with it, sheriff just blows it off cause hes to busy and tells us we have to dispose of it, cause the owner doesn't care or want to press charges on who stool it. Yes ive met some nice people moving out here, just there's always a few who ruin it for everyone. Sled on! Let it Snow.

I feel like i meet more out of staters than locals out at the bars. I like it here so far.. im here for money. Been learning alot out here as well which is always a plus.

Yup..

I'm from a boom town as well. There are those thankful for what we have to offer and obviously those who come with hands outstretched. I am one of the employers in my town and have seen a lot of interesting people come and go. The one thing I hear that is the one thing that puts a slant on how employment is assessed is the phrase... "I came here to make money". I have heard so many versions of this in many contexts and yet they all ring the same.

The man I put up in camp says "Why does the other guy get to work the weekend? I came here to make money!!!"

Another says "That guy is from town so give HIM the weekend off, I came here to work!!!"

I hired a supervisor. I explained that he is to manage the crew, schedule the work with the men, taking into account the quantity of work at the present time and what is coming up. I explained we need crews on opposing shifts so we always have coverage on days where the other crew has time off. I explained that his work will come with the work the rest of the crew has.... still I hear "I came here to make $$$".

It is a funny thing. We have company supplied transportation and housing. We attract a large group of people, some looking for the big $$$ and some coming here because they can't keep a drivers license so they can come here and be transported from doorstep to doorstep. Others come with the big dream and can't pass an AD&D test. In this industry it is a standard!!! So one comes and takes the lottery test.... pass/fail.... flip a coin!!!

STILL the one thing that gets me is the variations of the phrase "I came here to make money!!!" I came here because I wanted to watch others make money. I opened my business because we needed another charitable organization to make sure slackers and peeps looking for the easy $$$ needed another charitable organization to fund their personal habits!!!

Please!!! Please!!! Think about how you treat the people you meet and the way you treat them. Think of what you do and what you leave behind. It is like sleddin... you pack it in... you pack it out!!! Treat others the way you would like to be treated. Work hard and expect only what you deserve. Then and only then will the local people respect you and the rest who come to "Make the Money!!!"

Cheers!!!

Love it!! Congrats to you on being a business owner! I've met some pretty interesting , awesome people. Actually last night, I had dinner with a guy i work with and his family. After dinner hands me the keys to his vehicle since my car just broke down and says " im about to get a new rig so drive this, and when i get mine i'll sell it to you for real cheap." Real solid family, beautiful people. And guess what, theyre locals. :)
