Took a mini road trip up to Bear Paw yesteday to check out the road conditions and snow line for this weekend. Stopped by the Mt Baker winery and grabbed a bottle of wine to enjoy in the snow and sun!!
The snow line is at the next to last right hand hairpin from the top. It went far enough that we couldn't see past the snow to any more gravel...but with the exposure I'm sure the last upper straight away is exposed, so probably about 1/4-1/2 mile of gravel should be expected.
The snow up top looked good, but from the road only the northern exposure is visible.
The road is getting a little rough...the normal sink hole area a couple miles before the snow park is getting pretty beat up.
There is a new sink hole about 3/4 of the way between the snow park and the Y to Excelsior / BearPaw. This one will be tough with a trailer larger than a 2 or 3 place.
The washout area past the Y has been completely filled in with a slide and only the road through is level.
Probably the best area to get a lot of peeps for camping is at the parking area at the Y. It took us 20 minutes to get from the snow line back to the Y. Not a lot of parking up top. Probably 1-2 trucks w/out trailiers at each swithback.
