Bear Paw Road Report

Took a mini road trip up to Bear Paw yesteday to check out the road conditions and snow line for this weekend. Stopped by the Mt Baker winery and grabbed a bottle of wine to enjoy in the snow and sun!! :D

The snow line is at the next to last right hand hairpin from the top. It went far enough that we couldn't see past the snow to any more gravel...but with the exposure I'm sure the last upper straight away is exposed, so probably about 1/4-1/2 mile of gravel should be expected.

The snow up top looked good, but from the road only the northern exposure is visible.

The road is getting a little rough...the normal sink hole area a couple miles before the snow park is getting pretty beat up.

There is a new sink hole about 3/4 of the way between the snow park and the Y to Excelsior / BearPaw. This one will be tough with a trailer larger than a 2 or 3 place.

The washout area past the Y has been completely filled in with a slide and only the road through is level.

Probably the best area to get a lot of peeps for camping is at the parking area at the Y. It took us 20 minutes to get from the snow line back to the Y. Not a lot of parking up top. Probably 1-2 trucks w/out trailiers at each swithback.

Hey mod- You think I can get a small 2 place turned around up there if we unhooked it and spun it? Would like to get 4 of us in 1 rig if possible.

yes you can, thats what we did this weekend. It took us an hour and a half to blow through all the shady snow spots to get as far as we did, then someone drove up and stole three gas cans from me. I was pretty happy! I love giving away 114. There is a sh!t load of snow up there still, we were suprised. we were also suprised to be the only ones up there too, where was everyone???

Yep...what logjammin said ^^^

We busted through the next to last left hand hairpin on Monday, so should be melted away enough by Friday. Should be no prob with a 2 place open.

logjammin, how was the lake?

Rock on! See ya up there Saturday AM. Will be in a blue Ford flatbed with 2 place. 4 sleds and 4 diehard dirtbags to boot!

The lakes were not nearly as melted as we thought they would be, it was crazy. Not one of them was as melted all the way around, it was like April or May. The road, like you said, had some big pot hole/slide spots, but my dad made it past with a sled bed and camping trailer, and my friend made it by with a Yukon, so no one should have problems getting there.

So, the national weather service shows Saturday with the better weather. What time of the day would someone be ready to ride either day? I will be soloing up from Kent.

Warning don't leave any thing on your trucks!
Two weeks ago, some one took my friends M1000 hood off the back of his flatbed.
