Beacan vs Airbag

I should give a little back story. My riding group recently attended a Mike Duffy Avalanche class. On the way home we had this debate. I said beacon and was in the minority. Just wanted to here some more opinions.

I think there point was if you could only afford one and you did ride by yourself the airbag would be best. By the way I highly recommend Mike's Class!

Good Point! If you were by yourself, i guess no one would be there to pick up your beacon signal and rescue you. So in this case, the airbag would give you the best chance of survival. Having said that . . . i dont, and would never recommend a person ride alone.

Cheers!

Beacan, Probe, Shovel and never ride alone even with a Airbag system. Your just asking for trouble if you do that. A recent event in Utah where a skier had an airbag and was caught was still buried under 2 ft of snow. Ride alone and and 2ft will kill you....

Beacon Probe and shovel are the bare min for riding in avy country. You also need to make sure that you know how to use them.

<O:p</O:pRemember that when using your gear slow is fast. People rush threw tings and miss signs and signals

<O:p</O:pRide safe and ride with other people. Only one the hill at a time and ride with spacing between each other. We have seen people buried on the trail.

If you ride with your head you shouldn't ever need any of it but still a beacon shovel and probe are mandatory and an airbag sure doesn't hurt for a little extra insurance.

I took Mike Duffy's class. I have purchased everything except an Avy bag. I was real close to buying one then found this site:

You reserve a bag, they ship it to you, you use it on your trip and ship it back when done. $49.00/ week.

I have not used them before and cannot vouch for them, but I am going to give it a try.

Diddos on the not riding alone!!!! Guy was buried and killed in MT on New Years Day, report says was wearing a pack but it was not deployed for some reason. Granted, he was still killed unfortunately but at least he had a chance of being dug out alive by his partners, whereas if you are out riding alone and your pack malfunctions or you happen to not get it deployed for whatever reason you are certainly done.

That is an excellent question. If you ride alone 100% of the time then I would say Airbag, but given that most people don't ride alone, I say beacon.

If someone were to get buried and they have a beacon, but you went with airbag first and no beacon it would be a pretty helpless feeling.

Good thing I read the back story...cause at first I was blown away by question of even choosing. Level 1 course at min. Shovel probe beacon! Practice.

Don't let either a beacon or airbag give you confidence. The only guarantee that both will provide is that your family and friends will be allowed to have your funeral sooner instead of waiting until summer to find you once the snow has melted.

Your brain is the best survival tool you have so use it wisely.
