Battery on my 2012 RMK Pro 800. Just for starting?

I legitimately have a stupid question: June of 2015 I bought a 2012 RMK PRO 800 on eBay. I went to pick it up and the seller told me it didn't have electric start.

I cleaned it up a little and after poking around under the hood I saw a battery. I believe the battery was dead as the electric start did not work.

Is there any reason that the machine would have a battery other than for electric start? I can't think of any reason.

Are the odds pretty good that I can put in a new battery and the electric start will work? I can't see why it wouldn't.

Thanks.

What richracer1 said. Another thing, snowmobile and ATV batteries are notorious for lasting only 2-3 years. At least that's my experience.

I still have the OEM battery in my ATV I bought in Oct of 2008. I does spend 99% of the time on a battery tender though.

I was told those tenders do work.
My 2004 John Deere garden tractor has the original battery in it. I have never taken it out or charged or had to jump it. It sits in cold storage all winter. Once it warms up in the spring it fires right up. Not normal if you ask me.

On the inside edge of the primary there will be a ring gear built in and what looks like a heavy speedometer cable under the y pipe also if you have electric start. Starter can be hard to see under there. But like everyone else said. Battery is just for starting only

I'd be more concerned at why the seller had no clue it had electric start. Might want to run that VIN somewhere, anonymously.

Thanks for the replies, everyone!

I'm excited to know that I can put in a new battery and have the electric start back up and running.

I'm not concerned about the seller being unaware of the electric start; he only rode 83 miles in two seasons and tried to tow from the carbon fiber rear grab handle which 1. tells me he didn't know much 2. led me to replace the rear handle.

Thanks again.

If the primary has a starter ring on it, you're likely golden. If not, the plot thickens.

FWIW, I've seen my share of dopey doras out there that just flip stuff around without really knowing what they're selling, sleds, guns, trucks. Good luck.
