Battery on mfd?

Anybody change this battery lately? I just noticed that my battery light is flashing on the mfd for the first time. Goes up to half battery gauge when running.

That's not good.

The charge indicator is an indication of how much power your stator is kicking out. You could have something as simple as a wire rubbed through and grounding out somewhere in your wiring harness ( I just had that happen 3 weeks ago:face-icon-small-fro) or you could have a component failing.

Are there any runnability issues or other symptoms... headlights dim, etc?

The indicator should be reading 3/4 to 7/8 of max (to top of screen essentially) at all times

Brutal. I had a funny feeling it had something to do with my stator. No issues with lights or anything. Not sure what to do next. So there isn't a little battery in the mfd that can burn out?

nope:(

Hmm, without any other symptoms its really hard to say what direction to go.

For the moment, here's a thread you can read to familiarize yourself a little bit with some of the electrical systems..... I have a few posts in there on page 3 relating to my problem from a few weeks ago.

You bet, there is a battery for the MFD, but the manual states it is for clock memory. You voltage gauge you noticed flashing has nothing to do with this memory battery.
As Seth mentioned, you may have stator problems, or a wiring or ground problem. Watch for other symptoms like dim headlights, runability, loss of hand/thumb warmers, and start testing stator output.

Interesting. I fired up my sled just now, and there is 3 bars on the battery meter. I only had a problem after my sled was sitting for 3 weeks. I've only been on one ride with it. I have been using my grip warmers more than I used to. It's possible that they could be shorting out the system. The question is, if my grips are shorting out, would the battery meter show a low signal?

Ah, good t thinking about that one, LOL

but ya, has nothing to do with the actual readout problems

Yep, that's about all you can do rill it actually does something.

Went for a sick pow ride this morning, and had no problems with the voltage gauge. Reading showed at least half a meter reading. Stoked. All grip warmers and lights are working fine. Actually, the sled ran like a champ today!! Had some nice steep pulls today. I disconnected my exaust tubes and plugged them with some bolts. Seemed to run nice, maybe a little more midrange too. :face-icon-small-win

the last 2 900 i have see have low readings on the mfd gauge have been bad capacitors no running problems but the capacitors were bad sucking up the voltage. when you are running the gauge should read all bars and all but on or 2 at idle. for what it is worth

Where are these capacitors located and how do you check them?

you can test it by putting 12 v from a car batter across the terminals for a short time and then disconnecting the batter and reading the voltage across the capacitor (for about 10 seconds I think) and the voltage drop should be very little and happen very shortly. If the drop is big you have a bad capacitor.

Unplug the capacitor before performing the test....

In case you hadn't figured it out,the capacitor acts like a battery in an RC circuit...

I know the capacitor is on the left in front of tank but where excactly is it and what does it look like?

I would just pull the tank and check. You going to need a 5/16 and 3/8 gas line removal tool. Take your seat off and remove the two bolts at the back of the tank and slide it out part way so you can remove the vent line on the top of the tank. Move that out of your way and you will see everything on the left side of the sled.
