Bathtub refinish?

Has anyone ever had a bathtub resprayed or refinished? My wife and I purchased a different house a while back, and one of the bathtubs is a fiberglass one piece tub and surround, it is actually a very nice unit, exactly what I would buy if putting a new one in, just an ugly color. I don't really want to gut the whole bathroom to change it and end up with a cheaper lesser quality unit, it's nice that its a one piece so there are no joints to caulk etc. I saw a van in town the other day that was from a refinishing company not too far away, just wondering how well this holds up and if it worth the money. I want to give the bathroom a quick facelift but not break the bank, there's only so much you can do with a harvest goldish/ almondy color tub...

I had my tub refinished about four years ago, incredible difference and holding up like new. There are two different companies up here in Anchorage that refinish tubs, the one I used with a hard finish, and another that uses a process similar to bed liner in a pickup truck.

Here is link to what I had done, if you are looking for info.

If fiberglass, I would guess you could scuff it & spray a topcoat gelcoat of any color you choose.
Most body shops can do this.
No reason they couldn't spray it on-site.

Yep. Did it about 2 months ago. Cost me $400, which included recaulking around the tub. Came with a 10 year warranty, although the guy who did it said it should last at least 20 years if you use the right cleaners (non-abrasive only!) So far, I could not be happier with the results. A whole lot less work than ripping out a bathtub.

I did a orange cast iron sink for my mom about 15 years ago.(painted it white) It came out perfect and lasted up till recently very well. Even with all the abuse of dishes clanging around in it not one orange chip ever showed up. Also considering it was a sink witch gets lots of abuse compared to a shower IMO it is well worth doing.

At that time I just bought a paint and catylist kit from a plumbing supply place. I am sure box stores have them now.
