Base Gasket / Top End Rebuild & Oil Pump Issues

Previous owner of my 04 Summit 800HO did a top end rebuild end of last season and put one ride on it. He mud have not paid too much attention....

When I run it (in my garage for now lol), there is a coolant leak from the base gasket right under the right side of the Y pipe. Obviously the gasket isn't seated/sealed properly or bolts aren't torqued right. It's fairly substantial, enough that after 5 minutes at idle and 3 or 4 squeezes of the fun-thumb there was a 4-5" puddle on garage floor.

Anyone have any insight other than the obvious; pull the engine, get a new kit and redo it all? I'm thinking that's what its gonna take but thought maybe someone would have some feedback. I would think the gasket has burned in by now and should of had a chance to seal properly.

Next, got the stuck oil pump syndrome going on. In the same run as above (5 minutes idle and 3 or 4 throttle blips) I had a 3-4" oil puddle under my exhaust! Frig!!! That much really?! I assume this is the oil pump sticking open but that is a sh*t load of oil to be pumping. Would it be related to the above gasket issue at all? Or just the pump stuck open?

Please post your thoughts and advise. I appreciate the help along with my snowmobile learning curve lol.

One thing for sure, sled won't be ran again til these are fixed, they'll be fixed soon, and then....let it snow let it snow let it snow!!!!

Sounds like a nightmare.. First I would clean the sled with brake clean and blow it 100% dry. Start her up for a few seconds at a time watching the entire time with a flash light for the first drop. There are hoses the oil could he coming out of if they are cracked.
Also, you don't have to pull the motor. Good luck!

The oil is definitely spraying out the pipe. I know that for a fact. So it's not a leaky hose or anything like that. Definitely coming through the system and out the pipe.

The antifreeze is from where I described. The top casing is brand new and everything is real clean, so I have watched from first drop on that and that is where it's coming from.

I don't have to pull the motor to change out the base gasket?! Really?

And where a bouts is the "oil pump" so I can slap a spring on that bad boy to assist with the closing?

Well, in that case. Just pull the pipe and y- pipe off. Remove the head, intake, carbs, ex valves etc. Un Bolt the jugs and slide them up and off. Do one at a time, turning ur steering post to get more clearance. take your time and it fairly easy.
The oil pump is located under the carbs. Pretty simplejob to do. Or you could just pull it out and send it to bigjohn at sledheadracing. For the amount of Time and pars you will be into it, you could get it fixed by the one and only and have a good piece of mind your sled will be ready to rip this winter..

Go over to doo talk and send bigwormskidoo5 a pm. He machines and fits the oil pump with a bearing, works sweet. I think he charges like $70.00. Fast turn time too.

In the mean time, disconnect the oil pump cable at the pump. Move the cable through it's full range of travel. Check the cable for fraying, I have seen numerous frayed cables cause the same issue.

1. pull the top end off and replace the bas gasket....2 hour job
2. put new exhaust gasket on and tighten the 8 screws with locktite.
3. the oil pump lever is probably not going back to its normal spot at idle so thats why you are getting over oiling issue. I put a spring from the chassis to the lever (a lightweight spring)just so it has that little extra pull to bring the lever back to where it needs to be.

These are minor issues and can be easily fixed for under $100 just a little bit of your own time. Just make sure you fix everything before you go out or you will be kicking yourself.

have fun!
