Backfire and die

98 600 RMK, stock with 2200 miles. Ran fine until it backfired, lost power and died. Pull a few times, nothing. Pull it again and it starts and runs fine. Take off and 100 yards later same thing. Sputter, backfire, lose power and die. Try to start and nothing. Change plugs but still no spark. Wait a few minutes, it starts and runs fine for a little ways then the process starts over.

I'm guessing CDI box. Anyone have any other ideas?

those had a cdi issue back in the day IIRC. most would shut down and never restart......mine would not shut down.

Could also be the coil.

STOP!! it is possible that it is a cdi but, it is very very unlikely!! first thing to do is un plug your kill switch and run it, see if it does it then. if it quits doing it it is the little black button that is underneath the throttle lever. If it does not fix it, take a look at the fuel filter. if it clogged it will starve the engine of fuel, causing it to back fire then quit. then fuel will seep through the clogged fuel filter, fill up the bowl of the carb and it will run again for a while. Try those two things before you spend a ton of money on a CDI.
