baby elk

When I was twelve years old I was fishing a small stream on a ranch my family used to own near Island Park and almost stepped on one curled up just like that, but it was still wet from being birthed. I ran and got my dad (who didn't believe me) and brought him back and we discovered it had a broken front leg. We decided to leave it alone but when we checked back half a day later it was still in the same spot and still abandoned so we built a makeshift sled and carefully drug it back to the pickup and drove it to the vet who put a cast on the leg and nursed it with a calf bottle. I don't know any details of how it happened 'cause I remember fish and game paying us a visit but we ended up raising that baby elk with our calves - we named her buttercup and I fed it everyday with a calf bottle. I swear she thought she was a dog and followed us kids around the yard like a pet. My mom has some pictures of me and my sister and a calf elk all on the trampoline together. She died the following spring of spotted fever. Thanks for the pic, it brought back a flood of good memories!

There all over the place around here. Didn't used to bed their calves down this close to the houses. But this year, all the mothers are bringing their calves right next to the people's homes. Just don't get too close with a dog, or momma will come unglued. We've been chased a few times, and throwing rocks don't bother them.

He was obviously close enough to get that pic. I am sure he knew what it was before he got that close.

Sorry but I get this $hit all the time at work. We have an area closed for Elk Calving and the Liberal Mountain bikers think it doesn't apply to them because they are on bikes.

Yer lucky you didnt get yer a$$ kicked by mumma cuz she was right there whether you could c her or not.
