Avy in Revy !!! :(

I really hate hearing these things. My condolences to his family and friends left behind.

You never like to hear stories like this. Positive thought go out to his family in their time of need. R.I.P.

It is never good to hear of losing someone. My thoughts are with the family and friends.

Be safe everyone.

It is EXTREMELY sad to hear of the passing of a fellow sledder, and someone's family member and friend.

Without coming across callous, I think the circumstance warrants some examination. Heading in to the weekend, the South Columbia avy report was as high as I've ever seen it. Red across the entire board. Feet of new snow on top of 6" of hoar frost/sun crusts/wind slabs developed over almost a month with no snow. If you don't know what that translates to....you are a danger to yourself and others in the mountains.

If you were in avy terrain in interior BC this weekend, it was virtually guaranteed to slide....I just don't understand why someone would play a game you can't win.

they were in the trees below the cabin just off Shaede lane where allot of people ride when socked in & high avy.but there are some big gullies above where the snow came from.

If avy's run in to the area, it is avy terrain, and should not be considered safe on an extremely high risk day. I'm not saying the fellow necessarily knew that. I'm saying that to be safe on a day with that type of avalanche rating....you have to know that stuff.

First new snow since around January 8th so everyone is a bit jacked up to ride fresh powder and the lure of being in the elements. What I find admirable is he sacrificed his life to help a fellow sledder.

No the whole story before replying something like this, both guys very exspericed and below tree line, and in considerable range...Both parking lots full of sledders, seen RCMP on the hill prior doing there regular daily checks, no other avalanches reported... Snow was real deep in trees and gave no signs of slufing, great family day being had

Always sad when this happens and yes both barried victims are members here, and have contributed lots, this location could of been myself or even you, it was a fluke in my books compared to what I ussally ride or go too, I bet that day I was in similar locations having a great time with others, like many others did, but just in a different spot on the hill

From what I have learned, common sense is bigger and wiser than any avalanche reports, but even more important is just plain luck... When it's your time it's your time

I really feel for the group, since I have ridden with them and consider them good friends

Rip Chris and my condolences to the family

Fred - no need to bash me, neg rep me, etc. I know it's a touchy subject and don't mean any disrespect. I am not trying to come across as a know-it-all, or that I have never made poor decisions....I most definitely have. I am sure everyone involved had the best of intentions.

What I hate, is poking around Snowest and the CAC site on a Thursday or Friday, seeing the forecasts for new snow and an extremely high-risk avalanche forecast, and pretty much knowing that come Monday, there will be one of these threads. I think that sucks.

I think some of the things you alluded to as qualifiers are actually potential problems. Parking lot full of trucks, RCMP on the mountain, popular area to ride. Mountains don't care about any of that stuff....none of that means anything, and those are the things that get you (anyone) in trouble. It's about slopes, weather, snowpack, etc....nothing else matters. The stuff most get away with on average days (like you say, luck can be a factor)....is not the same stuff you can get away with on a weekend like this past one. Luck eventually runs out, and on some days, it runs out pretty quick.

Again....I'm not trying to say that in a "holier-than-thou" way. I'm trying to say that in a "we should all really think about this so we have less of these threads" way. That's all.
